Owens and Brumley Funeral Home - Wichita Falls Obituary

Rev. Kenneth and Sandra Matthews passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2020.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2020 at Bowman Cemetery in Lakeside City with Rev. Larry Matthews officiating.  Arrangements are under the direction of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.

Rev Kenneth and Rev Sandra Matthews were married over 55 years. Their love for each other was a testimony of God’s love on display. They were patient and kind always treating one another with respect. They were faithful servants of Jesus Christ and taught the Bible with boldness. A day never passed without prayer and scripture reading in their home. Everyone who met them knew they loved Jesus from their IHOP waitress to their closest friends. They faithfully pastored local churchs throughout their lifetime and loved each one of them. They loved their church family and made sure they were taken care of. They have impacted many by their love for Jesus and been a vessel for the Lord.

Rev Kenneth’s life verse was, ““In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”  [1 Thessalonians 5:18] He lived this verse out and was a man full of joy and gratitude. He loved old cars and fishing. For a short time he enjoyed his fishing boat. He was a humble man who made the best of every situation. He was kind and caring to all people. His wife in her last days testified that he was the most loving man.

Rev Sandra’s life verse was, ““All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”  [2 Timothy 3:16-17] Anyone who has even sat under her teaching knows she truly believed God’s word had the power to change lives. She stored God’s word in her heart and could quote it flawlessly. She had the ability to make everyone feel loved and cared for. She was great at decorating. She could take simple things and turn them into something beautiful. She had great vision for all things in her life and was a woman of strength and grace.

They had hobbies but nothing compared to their love for their family. They had three incredible sons whom they loved and always made time for. They created many memories and were the best parents. They took in each daughter in law like they were their own daughters. She took them under her wing and taught them how to be a good wives, moms, and ladies. They created special memories of laughter and special family meals especially lasagna. They valued family and made their home a safe place for all to gather.

They are best known by their favorite people as Nonny and Poppy.  They treated each grandchild special and never left anyone out. They all felt loved and valued by them. There are many memories of dominos, biscuits & gravy and late night life discussions. Nonny let you know what she thought you should be doing and Poppy always made sure he stole a kiss for all of them to see. They always flirted with each other. Pop loved his black T-shirt and white tennis shoes. Nonny had her pretty purple cardigan on and always greeted them with a hug and kiss. Poppy had the best homemade cowboy biscuits and Nonny had the best homemade gravy. There was never a kid table only a family table. Their great grandchildren brought them so much joy. As they got to watch each one of them learn to crawl and eventually run around their house. They had their special bowls they could play with as Nonny put on a puppet show for them. Nothing brought a bigger smile on their face then the babies.

Poppy is remembered by his grandchildren as a humorous, wise, thoughtful, kind, hilarious, admirable, and a loving grandfather. Nonny is remembered by her grandchildren as a loving, sophisticated, strong, sweet, comforting, and wise a grandmother. They will always be remembered as a couple that held hands until the end never departing each other’s side. They were the cutest couple, sweetest parents, and best grandparents anyone could have.

The couple were preceded in death by their parents; Kenneth’s sister Jewel; and Sandra’s brother Jimmy.

They are survived by sons Eric Matthews, Kevin Matthews and wife Jan, and Larry Matthews and wife Venita; grandchildren Ryan and wife Deborah, Heather and husband Andrew, Sarah and husband Adam, Nolan and wife Bethany, Kenny and Savanna, Dillon and Cara, and Larry Joe Jr.; great-grandchildren Philip, AJ, James Paul, and Daxton; Kenneth’s sisters Carol Ann, Frances, and Barbara; and Sandra’s brother Donnie.

The family requests that memorial donations be made in the couple's name to Christ Gospel Church, 1600 23rd Street, Wichita Falls, TX 76301.

Bro & Sis Cleveland Cooper

The angels are rejoicing because two more warriors for Christ have joined the heavenly army. They will be missed by all of their family and our hearts go out to their sons. I loved Kenneth, what a cool cousin he was. We will meet again in the heavenly places, praise God!

Bro & Sis Matthews were my big brother and big sister, when I was just a silly 19-year old, in Granite City, Il. I looked up to both of them, and spent a lot of time in their home. Sis. Matthews was a great cook. Bro. Matthews was called to preach, and it showed, every time he told us what he had learned in the Word. They did go on to pastor several churches before coming back to Granite City as our pastors. Years later, after I moved to Wichita Falls, Tx., they became my pastors again. What...

Dear Matthews Family -
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time of loss. May you feel God's Amazing Grace & comfort surrounding you.
