Kenneth Shuttleworth Obituary

Kenneth Robert Shuttleworth died at home on July 26th, 2025.

Ken was born on November 16, 1940, in Wilmington Delaware to Ernest Edmund Shuttleworth and Margaret (Peggy) Shuttleworth. Following graduation from Mt. Pleasant High School in Wilmington, Delaware he served in the U.S. Air Force. After completing his service, he made his way to Memphis Tennessee.

Ken graduated from the University of Memphis Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1968. As a young lawyer, he quickly obtained a significant amount of trial experience and in 1974 founded what is now the law firm, Shuttleworth PLLC, where he practiced for the next 51 years. He found his stride professionally advocating for the interests of others and had a lifetime of positive impacts on his colleagues and clients. Ken was a renowned trial lawyer, whose cross-examination skills and ability to connect with juries were second to none. He was past President of the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association, an elected member to the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel, and a Fellow in the Tennessee Bar Foundation.

In addition to the many professional accolades and successes he garnered as trial lawyer, Ken's most cherished accomplishments came from the help he provided others in the legal profession when they were facing times of personal crisis. Through his work with the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program (TLAP), and his unique way of distributing "tough love," Ken helped save many careers. Ken was appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court to the TLAP Commission on which he served for six years, and for a period of time served as the elected Commission Chair.

Ken was predeceased by his mother and father, Ernest and Margaret Shuttleworth. Ken is survived by his daughter Teresa Goodrich; sister Carole Smith (Ray); brother William Shuttleworth (Jan); grandchildren Meg, William, and Olivia; and five nieces and nephews.

A private family service is being held in Stuart, Florida. A memorial service is being scheduled for a soon to be announced date in Memphis, Tennessee.

Until then, Ken and his family encourage you to celebrate his life with your family and friends with the same enthusiasm, determination and joy Ken shared with you.
