Lark Bennett Obituary

BENNETT Lark Fran Bennett, one of the original founders of the Barkus Parade, who devoted her life to humanitarian efforts and animal rights passed away earlier this week. Lark knew no difference in people and loved them with all depth required to ease their woes through random and directed acts of kindness. She welcomed people and animals who had no home into her home or found them a home. Larkie changed many lives and her unselfish example has renerleerated through the hearts of those she has touched into the community and beyond. She will be missed and remembered with warm smiles and love. We ask St. Francis of Assisi to bless and recommend Larkie to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was the daughter of Joanna Klinder Cote and the late Henry Joseph Bennett. Stepdaughter of Jules Cote. She was also the sister of Ginger Bennett Lambert, Toni Bennett Christopher, Brian Andrew Bennett, and was the granddaughter to Herbert Klinder, Bessie Klinder, Henry Joseph Bennett and Bertie Melissa Bennett. Larkie was the aunt of Christian M. Lambert, Sheri Lambert Ruiz, Brandi Lynn Lambertand the great-aunt of Nicolas, Gabriella, and Natalie Bennett, Jamie and Jardan Lambert, and Sydni and Elleanor Ruiz. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. (in Metairie Cemetery) on Wednesday July 13, 2005 at 6:00PM and Thursday July 14, 2005 at 10:00AM, followed by a Mass at St. Louis Cathedral at Jackson Square in the French Quarter of New Orleans at 12:00 NOON. Lark was a truly amazing person

Lawrence Zeilinger

January 5, 2006

I only met Lark about a dozen times in that many years, half of them in the six months before she died at the "record night" parties at her home on Wednesdays where I met many interesting artists and other people. I believe she truly was a saint and a person much beloved by all that ever had the privilege and good fortune of meeting her. May St. Francis watch over her for all eternity.

Lark was a true friend to me for a long time. Being her neighbor I have thought often in the past week about how she would be busy right now saving every animal that she could with so many left behind due to Hurricane Katrina. So, I thought I would share this story. A friend of mine and his sister left St. Charles Parish and traveled to his sisters house in uptown New Orlenas the other day to check on her property. After they secured the roof they took a walk along the river trail. They heard a woman calling to them for help. They asked her what they could do for her. She replied that she needed toilet paper, soap, candles, and various other supplies. My friends went back to the sisters house and gathered up everything they could. They got back to the woman and started talking to her. It was Larks mother! She was at her home and had ridden out the storm with 15 pets. She is doing good and doing everything she can to keep Larks memory alive. Even in these trying times! The good deeds of Lark continue to live through those who love her!

Lark was one of my customers. I was her picture framer. She made ME feel so special. She was ALWAYS smiling and "Happy as a Lark." She would always come into the Framin' Place on a Monday. Lark always had her New Orleans original daiquiri. Only white russian would do. Lark was such a breath of fresh air. She put everyone in a GREAT mood with each visit. I think of Lark EVERYDAY and I am very sad about this huge loss of such a wonderful person. On the other hand, I am smiling just remembering her always cheerful disposition. I knew Lark for over 10 years. I feel so blessed. Everytime I see a car like hers, I look for her. Whenever I see a petite brunette with long hair, I do a double take.

My sincere condolences to Lark's family and friends, Stacey Wohlgemuth/ Framin' Place and Gallery in Metairie,La

I will always remember Lark with fondness. She "found" my very first pet Maggie, a beautiful sweet springer spaniel, that my husband Sal and I loved like a child. She groomed and lovingly cared for Maggie at her Spain Street home for many years. I will keep Lark and her family in my prayers. She will be missed.

I could never have created a more perfect neighbor than Lark. Can you imagine having Lark in the house next door? I would hear her calling my name from her kitchen door on the other side of my fence with a bag full of crawfish, a box of shrimp, a left over steak (my favorite), black-eyed peas and cabbage on New Years Day, a mimosa on a Sunday morning, a half a bar of chocolate, because she knew how much I loved it.

Giving and generous are not words that are large or broad enough to cover Lark. She gave me things I didn’t even know I needed. She was like that with animals and human beings: she anticipated their needs and delivered with a smile and a hug and 1-50 kisses.

I aspire to be a fraction as accepting as Lark was with people and animals. All were welcome, all were worthy, all were accepted, warts and all. I learned a great deal from Lark, but if I can just take a little of her openness to all of God’s creatures, I will truly be blessed.

I will miss you dearly, Lark. Thank you for the gift of your house, your friendship, your joy, and your love.

And, as always, have a WONDERFUL day! God bless you.

My deepest sympathy to Lark's family and friends and all the millions of people and animals that had the pleasure of knowing her.

I met her many years ago when she picked up my boss's dogs.It is a very sad tragedy. She will be missed by so many.

I think if all who new her looked at a star at night, I know she would be looking back and saying rejoice in your life, live each day to it's fullest. I know she is an angel always looking over all animals and all people. She will be so missed.YOU WERE AN ANGEL IN LIFE AND YOU ARE AN ANGEL IN HEAVEN.

The members of Mystic Krewe of Barkus, as well as the animals and humans of our community, lost a champion the moment we lost our Lark. She will be sorely missed by those whose lives she touched. What a pity she could not have lived longer to expose even more to her zest for all of God's creations.

will see you when we cross the bridge,

Man! What a unique creature! Lark was little lower than the angels while here on earth! So constituted, her possibilities were unlimited!

Larkie was a whole library in one volume.

She was a complete garden in one seed.

With more power than a king, she had dominion over the earth. She could call the plays, and always helped others to stay in the game. She was the maker of her own destiny, lived where she chose and how she chose.

She is the only creature that could rise by bowing, for she found elevation in her subjection to her maker.

Not a day will go by that I don't aspire to be a little more like Lark.

I will miss you dearly and love you always.

Your good friend and biggest- bestest fan,

I know you will truly be missed by the Baker family and all who knew you. You had only been reconnected with this side of your family several years ago. All though we only saw you once a year at the family reunion, it we such a joy. You were always so happy and when you saw people and you gave them hugs and kisses you could tell you truely meant it. You brought some sunshine into our lives you will always be in our hearts, and you will be missed so very much.

I have read each and every one of the entries in this guest book. It was compelling to know what I always knew...that Lark was so deeply loved and admired by an untold amount of people. My friendship with hew was very special. I shared in the privelage of dating Lark for quite awhile. During that period her love, passion and deep kindness was eternally imprinted on my life. I was forever changed from the moment she touched me. Lark, if you can see or hear this I miss you greatly and WILL see you again. Take care my sweet!

Lark was kind to us with our little maltese Mikey Tabb. She truly loved him and we loved her. She took the time one day to call to say that she saw a dog that looked like Mikey walking with someone and she wanted to make sure that we had our Mikey. What beautiful person she was. We will always think of her with kindness in our heart.

It is so hard to describe the emptiness you are feeling over the loss of someone as sweet, loving and caring as Lark. She was always so full of life and so full of love for everyone. Her presence at the family reunion less than three weeks ago was such a pleasure. I only wish that I could have known her a lot longer than I did. My life is richer for having known her.

I was blessed to meet Lark through a mutual friend almost ten years ago. I was also left with a wonderful and lasting impression of Lark. Our friend suffered a long term illness and could no longer afford to have his pups groomed. Knowing the importance of these pups to our friends life, Lark insisted on grooming the pups and she did so happily. No matter how many hours Lark spent on her feet taking care of pets and people, when I would arrive at the end of her day to pick up the pups, she always greeted me with the purest of joy. I admired her then, I admire her still, and am comforted to know she is with our Lord, reaping the blessings and rewards she so richly deserves. I pray the love coming forth from those who've been affected by Lark will help to comfort and ease the loss and pain felt by her family and friends. God's blessings to all.

What a sad day for so many of us, the humans, and the little creatures. We will miss Lark's message, "Have a wonderful day", her beautiful smile, her sense of humor, and her nononsense approach to the respect of God's creatures.

Lark loved and understood our cocker spaniel, Miss Lucy. Each month, for over eight years, Lucy spent the day with Miss Lark. When we arrived, Lark would pick her up like a baby, and kiss her face. We do the same, but somehow it seemed so special when she did it, like a loving Aunt.

When we moved to Covington we continued to come into New Orleans for Lucy's monthly grooming. She was too old to change, and she felt so safe and comfortable there. Lark always accommodated our schedules--so giving. Last Wednesday, as I dropped her off, Lark came from behind her desk to give me a hug. It was a gesture that she had never done before. It haunts me.

God Bless You, Lark Bennett. What a special gift you were to us. Miss Lucy shares our loss.

Words cannot describe how great a person Lark was. I had the great honor of knowing Lark through my Uncle Jerry. From picking up dogs to groom or going camping Lark made a great impression on me. She had the magic to make the biggest dog who would try to bite everyone else calm down and lick her face. She will always be in my thought. I love you Lark. Until we meet again.

Never enough words to describe a person such as Lark. She brought laughter to everyone she met. Filled our hearts with joy and showed much love. Not just to her family but anyone she met. We will deeply miss her but hold all the memories shared with her thru her tales of her childhood and her memories. I think I speak for the entire Baker family when I say these words and she will be sadly missed, but we are blessed that we were able to have her as part of our family. Her smile, her spirit, her laughter will forever be in our hearts.

We can still hear her voice-the kindest and most loving voice we have ever known. A person who spoke, and lived every action from the heart--an example to everyone of unconditional love. I've never known anyone like her, and never will. She is surely in heaven with the other beings who give such unconditional love---like Delta, Lady Godiva and my own Wookie, all of whom she loved and understood.

July 13, 2005

I just can't find the words to express how heartbroken I am about this tragic loss to our community. I know God judges us for our deeds on this earth, and there is no doubt that Lark has gone to meet our Heavenly father.

Lark helped me raise my abused and abondoned dog Roxie. She devoted so much time to my baby girl to help her get over the scars of being an abused animal. Lark immersed Roxie and myself with her constant love and affection and would always send her home with a scarf around her next and a bone in her mouth. I am just heartbroken I will never see my friend who my dog Roxie loved as well as I. This is a truely tragic loss for her friends, family and animal lovers all over our community.

Lark, you were so sweet and wonderful. I'll never forget the first time I brought Oliver to you, after he snapped at the lady at PetSmart and they made me get him out of there. You knew just how to handle him, how to talk to him. He was comfortable with you right away and was very excited to come back everytime after that. I took photos of him and Udy each time cause your cuts were always a little differant from the ones before. I was always anxious to come pick them up afterwards, to see how they looked. We love you very much Lark.

Larkie,it's your lil'pumpkin pie, crawfish pie. Thank you for raising me the way you did. You taught me a lot about God and life. I reflect on moments from a small child; the time Ceaser the cockerspanial bit me on my breast and how you kept me calm, to riding the bull at Gilly's to learning how to ride my motorcycle and rode it accidently thru your gate and you did not get mad. There are so many times and wonderful moments that I had the privledge to have with you. When I was in your home or next to you I knew I was at home. Your smell, smile, how you listened, everything about you. You were my hero. I remember when we last spoke; all we could say to each other is how much we love each other and Happy Mother's Day! Now your with Mona, Godiva, Delta, Sniffles, Lady, Chuck, Shamus, Demphsy... The names of all the little ones that you loved go on and on. Thank you so much for Mona! We miss her so much too.
