Stockton, CA
March 30, 1951 - January 24, 2007
Lawrence Robert Briscoe passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2007. Larry Briscoe (only his mother called him Lawrence, and only when he was misbehaving) graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1969, a star football player who made all-city and all-league honors his senior year. He studied at Delta College, earning his A.A. degree, and then attended Humphreys Law School at night, sharing a small house with his lifelong friend and law-school classmate George Abdallah, now a Superior Court Judge. He graduated from law school and passed the State Bar examination in 1980, and practiced law in Stockton until his sudden death. Judge Abdallah married Larry and Carol in Larry's longtime Stockton home January 13, 11 days before his death. Larry's great-grandfather Michael Brisco (the spelling of Irish immigrants could be erratic) was a Stockton City Councilman in the early 20th century. John Louis Briscoe, Larry's grandfather, was the first Stockton police officer to be killed in the line of duty, on February 5, 1917. Larry's father, John Lloyd Briscoe, was San Joaquin County Public Defender and one of the first public defenders in the State. Before it was fashionable he advocated for the right of an indigent criminal defendant to have a lawyer, and he traveled the country speaking against the barbarity of the death penalty. John Lloyd Briscoe died October 15, 1965, when Larry was a freshman in high school. Larry followed his father's steps, bristling at injustice wherever he saw it, and passionately representing clients in court. His was not an understated courtroom style. The fire and rage of a Darrow, a Rogers, a Vincent Hallinan, were his. He was generous-"to a fault," Judge Adballah would say. He loved his many friends, his family, and his new wife Carol. But Rachel and Michael, his children, were his consuming love. Parental love is said to be deepest, and it never ran deeper than in Larry. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Cruz Briscoe of Stockton. Devoted father of Michael Lawrence Briscoe and Rachel Elizabeth Briscoe. Loving son of the late John L. and Doris O. Briscoe. Dear brother of John Briscoe (Carol Sayers) and their children, Katherine and John Paul Briscoe of Novato and Larry's sister, Janet Briscoe (Melissa Blagg) of Stockton.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 5882 N. Ashley Ln., Stockton, CA, Friday, February 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. DeYoung Memorial Chapel, 601 N. California St., Stockton, CA in charge of arrangements. There will be no viewing. Private Committal.

Lots of sadness comes over me as I fondly remember an old friend who has passed away. Larry, myself and many other scoundrels (you know who you are!) whiled away many hours in each others company. Frisbies, parks, concerts,Sonora Street, tan volkswagon bus, camping, being told to leave Oakdale,Zephyr Cove, and lots of other sources for memories.
Ciao dude.

Sad news travels distances. Like many from years ago, I knew Larry's kindness, humor, and love of life and family. There is comfort in knowing that he was loved by so many. My heart goes out to
Larry's bride and famliy. May the gentleness and comfort of healing be with you soon.

Larry has appeared in my courtroom on numerous occasions. He was always well prepared, courteous to all, and a gentleman. He was respected by his colleagues and the bench. Larry had the ethics of his father, John Briscoe. As a deputy district attorney in 1960-1962 I had many preliminary hearings with John Briscoe representing the accused. John Briscoe was a man of his word, who could be trusted by the attorneys and judges. I also knew Larry's uncle Elmer Briscoe when Elmer was a lt/capt in Sheriff Mike Canlis' office. Elmer Briscoe left the sheriff's office and became the chief of police for Reno, Nev. Larry carried on the finest tradition of the law. My deepest condolecences to his family.

Larry and I were two members of the graduating class of 1980 from Humphrey's. Since the classes were small, we all became fast friends. Larry came to Lodi to practice law with me and Gene Walton. His courtroom abilities were amazing. Though I haven't seen much of him in later years, I will sorely miss his bright smile and the feeling he was so happy to see me when we did happen to meet.

I've known Larry since after high school. After my marriage and subsequent children I seemed to lose contact with old friends. Our paths would frequently cross ( most recently helping re-model his kitchen ) and ea. time it was as if no time had passed at all. Larry always made you feel welcome and he will be missed.

Due
to a death in my family I am unable to be at the funeral on Fri. I met
Larry when he dated and married Lynne. When he came to court we always
talked about Rachel and Michael and he was very proud of their
accomplishments. Despite his troubles in life, he seemed to bounce
back. He will be missed by many.

You've always been a joy Larry to make contact with, a unique person I've come to know over the years even though I rarely made contact with. The most powerful night I remember is that night in the 1970's when you accepted Jesus Christ as your saviour and I believe he never left you after that night and you are with him now filled with the peace and joy we all long for. I hope one day we all meet again and I'm assured we will. May God Bless and comfort your family during their time of need.

Larry was unlike any person I have ever met. From the time that we were classmates at St. Mary's until now we shared many happy times together. His love for family and friends knew no bounds and I shall always remember and cherish the times we spent together. I consider it an honor to have known and loved such a gentle man as Larry. My heart goes out to Carol, Michael and Rachel.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I am saddened to hear of Larry's passing. I knew Larry growing up in Stockton and lived a short bicycle distance from his home. Later in life we played golf together when we could. I was attending law school at Humphreys and was with him one day when he announced on the golf course that he intended to go to law school. While practicing law we would see each other from time to time in the courthouse or talk by phone. We were frinds. I will miss him.
