Leah McCarthy McCurry
09/14/1934 - 07/14/2025
With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Leah McCarthy McCurry on Monday, the 14th of July 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 90 years of age.
Born on the 14th of September 1934, Leah was the cherished daughter of Faustine and Glenn McCarthy. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Glenna, Faustine, and Mary Margaret; one brother, Glenn; and one of her beloved daughters, Leah McCurry Croxton.
Leah grew up in Houston in a prominent oil and gas family and had many stories to share about her extraordinary upbringing. She graduated from Lamar High School before attending Rice University, where she met Merrit Lee "Sonny" McCurry. Together, they had five beautiful children.
Leah was a woman of quiet strength, steadfast faith, and boundless love. A proud Texan with deep Irish roots, she carried forward a legacy of resilience, wit, and warmhearted generosity. Throughout her life, she remained committed to service and community, particularly through her many joyful years volunteering with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo-where she celebrated tradition, friendship, and the enduring spirit of giving.
Leah's greatest devotion was always to her family. She was the treasured mother of Merrit Lee "Sonny" McCurry, Jr. and his wife Kim, Michael McCurry, Margo McCurry Creekmore and her husband Mitch, Leah McCurry Croxton, and Michelle "Chelle" McCurry.
She is survived by her adored grandchildren, Leah Baker Johnson, Rachel Collins, Michael McCurry, Jr., Sonny McCurry, III, Melissa Brannen, Sean McCurry, Mary Katherine Gimmler, Faustine Lee Croxton, Jett Jewell, and Megan Taylor; as well as fourteen great-grandchildren who brought her immeasurable pride and joy.
Leah was the matriarch of a large, loving family, and her presence was the thread that wove them all together. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and open arms-a gathering place where stories were shared, holidays were celebrated, and memories were made.
Leah had an extraordinary ability to make friends wherever she went. Her warmth, sincerity, and gentle humor earned her the love of all who knew her. She was a loyal friend, a gracious host, and a steady presence in the lives of many.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the devoted caregivers-Sandra Ferrofino, Maria Lopez, and Gayle Glasso with AccentCare-who provided comfort, dignity, and companionship to Leah in her final years. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
Though words cannot fully capture the depth of our loss, we take comfort in remembering the joy, grace, and love that Leah brought into this world. Her legacy lives on in the laughter of her grandchildren, the strength of her children, and the kindness she inspired in everyone she met.
A recitation of the Holy Rosary is to commence at half-past four o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 21st of July, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, followed by a reception and visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening.
A celebration in honor of Leah's life is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 22nd of July, also in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where Fr. Juan Torres is to officiate.
The Rite of Committal is to follow, via an escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at a venue to be announced during the services.
She will be dearly missed and forever cherished.
