In 1985, Secretary Pierce of HUD introduced me to Leonard Burchman and assigned him to work with the newly formed Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission as public affairs liaison. I was privileged to direct the Washington Office and then work closely with Leonard. His contribution to the success of the first national holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. was of utmost importance. I trust it was one of the things that he looked back on later with great pride. And deservedly so....
