Leonard Burchman Obituary
BURCHMAN LEONARD BURCHMAN (Age 85) On Sunday, March 28, 2010, Leonard Burchman of Leisure World, Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband for 60 years to Marilyn Burchman; devoted and loving father of Marc (Phyllis) Burchman and Corey (Sherri) Burchman; dear brother of Sheldon Burchman and Grace (Irving) Borowitz; adored grandfather of Abigail (Ari) Meltzer, Jeffrey Burchman, Zachary Burchman, and Katherine Burchman; caring brother-in-law of Joy Krissoff. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 29 at 12:30 p.m. at DANZANSKY-GOLDBERG MEMORIAL CHAPELS INC. 1170 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 (301-340-1400). Interment to follow at Judean Memorial Gardens, Olney, MD. The family will receive friends immediately following the interment at Clubhouse 1 on the grounds of Leisure World. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Charity of Your Choice.

In 1985, Secretary Pierce of HUD introduced me to Leonard Burchman and assigned him to work with the newly formed Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission as public affairs liaison. I was privileged to direct the Washington Office and then work closely with Leonard. His contribution to the success of the first national holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. was of utmost importance. I trust it was one of the things that he looked back on later with great pride. And deservedly so. Leonard earned the trust of Coretta Scott King and worked closely with her for years after that first holiday in 1986.
I respected Leonard and believe his work was an integral part of the success of the first national holiday honoring Dr. King.
