Lindsay Allen Obituary

Lindsay Anderson Allen, Jr., 81, of Charlotte, NC, passed away April 22, 2017 following a brief illness.

Born on his grandparents' farm in Allsboro, AL, he spent his early years in North Alabama, in Decatur, Cullman, and Florence. He attended high school in Corinth, MS, and graduated with honors from Vanderbilt University in 1957. A chemical engineer, he enjoyed a long career in the synthetic textiles industry, working for Chemstrand in Decatur, AL; Monsanto in Guntersville, AL, and Pensacola, FL; and Celanese in Charlotte. Following retirement from Celanese, he founded his own executive search firm, Mark III Personnel, which he operated for 25 years. Afterwards, he was affiliated with SP Associates in Charlotte, conducting executive searches in the engineering and financial industries, among many others. Mr. Allen was an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Vanderbilt University Alumni Club in Charlotte and was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross. Lindsay was a passionate sports fan, and was particularly fond of the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, North Carolina Tar Heels, and his alma mater, the Vanderbilt University Commodores. He was also an avid reader, keeping up on the latest financial, economic and political news. As many friends and family members have noted, Lindsay "never met a stranger," and could walk up and talk to anyone about anything.

Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents Lindsay A. Allen, Sr. and Ruby Denton Allen, and a brother Jim Allen. A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sylvia Miller Allen; two sons, Michael (Dorie) of Wake Forest, NC; and Jon of Hamtramck, MI; one brother, Thomas Allen (Pam) of Fairhope, AL; a sister, Mary Daily, of Santa Monica, CA; three grandchildren (Henry, Mary Harper and Meghann), and several nieces and nephews.

He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life on Saturday, May 13th at Gold Hill Road Church of Christ, 1055 Gold Hill Road, Fort Mill, SC 29708. Visitation begins at 2 pm, Memorial Service at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Red Cross in Charlotte or a charity of your choice.

Lindsay welcomed me to Chemstrand in 1960. Our families raised our babies together in Decatur. We worked together for over 25 years. He and I were friends and he was like a brother to me. I loved him and am grieving his untimely death. My only comfort is in knowing he is with Jesus and that The Holy Spirit is ministering to Sylvia, Mike, Jon, and the grandchildren.

Lindsay has been a great neighbor as well as friend for the past 19 years. We could always solve the world's problems when we took time out from our yard work to have impromptu summit meetings in each other's yard . Always admired his unique perspective and insight on any number of topics. You could tell he & Sylvia had a special relationship that any couple would envy. Will miss him! Rest well my friend!

So saddened to hear about Lindsay. He was so dear to me when I was hunting for a job. He worked on my resume and made the contact for me that led to my being employed. And he followed my career with genuine interest. He would be so encouraging through the years, and repeatedly told me how proud he was of me. He was a pleasure to be around. I know there are many out there whose lives were influenced and made better by him. And I am one of those lucky ones who was fortunate to have crossed his path.

Lindsey was such a kind and giving person, always a gentleman. He took a genuine interest in other people and always had a word of encouragement. Despite his many achievements, he was humble and unassuming. He was young at heart, always up to date on the latest business news, sports and entertainment. Roger and I have so many happy memories of eating with Lindsay and Sylvia and going to the movies. We are so saddened by his death and our hearts go out to the whole family. Much love to you, dear Sylvia. God blessed you with 60 years with an amazing man.

Larry and I are saddened by the death of Lindsay. He was a brother-in-law and so much more. He was an anchor to all of us in the struggles of life. He truly never met a stranger. If you were eating alone in a restaurant, most likely Sylvia and Lindsay would meet you and make you feel very important and that you had met a new friend..He was an encourager to all. I have never known a more devoted couple than the two of them. Blessed to have shared well over 60 years of love and family together.

As Lindsay's baby sister, I can say with no hesitation that he was a model big brother. He always took time to play with me when I was a child and told me crazy stories that made me laugh. He never made me feel there were things I couldn't do because I was a girl. He always supported me and encouraged me and told me he was proud of me. I was so richly blessed to have him in my life and in my heart. He was a stellar soul, and he will continue to inspire me every day.
