Linn Tompkins Obituary

COLUMBIA — Dr. Linn Shecut Tompkins Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, known to many as “Dr. T,” passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2010. His sharp wit, engaging stories and exuberant personality will be greatly missed by his family and legion of patients and friends.

Born February 23, 1933, Dr. Tompkins was educated in Columbia’s A.C. Moore Elementary School, Hand Junior High School and graduated from Columbia High School. After attending the University of South Carolina for only three years, he was accepted to the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Air Force as a captain in the dental corps and was stationed in Plattsburg, N.Y. After his honorable discharge, Dr. Tompkins attended Temple University School of Dentistry and earned his master’s degree in orthodontics in 1963.

He returned to Columbia later that year and joined an established orthodontic practice until he opened his own office on Devine Street in January 1966. His practice quickly grew as a result of his charming personality and excellent technical skills. He soon expanded to Middleburg Drive in 1971 and the practice remained there for almost 30 years. In January 1989, his son, Sims, joined his practice and the two continued to work and treat patients together until Dr. Tompkins’ retirement in 1997.

Dr. Tompkins held many offices and was a member of many dental and orthodontic associations including: the American Association of Orthodontists, the Southern Association of Orthodontists, the South Carolina Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the South Carolina Dental Association, the Greater Columbia Dental Association and the Academy of Dentistry International. He served on the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry from 1980-1986 and volunteered at the Richland County Children’s Clinic during his many years in practice.

Of the many awards and accomplishments that Dr. Tompkins had amassed over the years, he was most proud of the fact that he was the first orthodontist certified by the American Board of Orthodontics in the Columbia area. The Southern Association of Orthodontists honored him by awarding him the very first Citizenship Award, an award given to recognize community activities that enhance the good public image of orthodontics.

Dr. Tompkins was a lifelong member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church and a supporter of its religious and educational ministries including the church, Saint Joseph School and Cardinal Newman School. He was a member of Forest Lake Club, the Tarantella Club, the Flamenco Club, the South Carolina Ball, Richland Sertoma Club and Executive Sertoma Club.

Dr. Tompkins had many and various hobbies and interests over the years from flying to photography. He loved all sports and coached basketball for many years in the Columbia Interfaith League and served as president of the Palmetto Baseball League. He enjoyed woodworking as an indoor hobby, but Dr. Tompkins loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, an occasional hunter and an accomplished golfer who shot his age or better on several occasions during the past several years.

Dr. Tompkins was blessed with a large and loving family.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Linda Caines Tompkins; children, Richard Sims Tompkins (Libby), Cynthia Tompkins Willcox (Whit), Charles Boyle Tompkins, Joseph Paulling Tompkins (Sally) and Paige Tompkins Bagwell; his daughter-in-law, Myda Rogers Tompkins; his sister, Virginia Tompkins McLaurin (Roy); sister-in-law, Jean Caines Gilmore (Alex); grandchildren, Richard Sims Tompkins Jr., Margaret Paulling Tompkins, William Rush Tompkins, Marian Rogers Tompkins, Jace Tompkins Bagwell, Patrick Devereux Tompkins, Joseph Griffith Tompkins, Mary Josephine Tompkins, Anna Paige Bagwell, Lynn Marie Tompkins, Virginia May Tompkins, Charles Boyle Tompkins Jr. and Elizabeth Shecut Tompkins; and five nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Linn S. “Jiggs” Tompkins III.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the residence. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cardinal Newman School, 4701 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29206 or St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3600 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205.

To the Tompkins family,
Dr. Linn put my braces on 37 years ago, and I remember him well and fondly! What a wonderful, joyful man who put his patients at ease - I never had "dental fear" during my many visits that year to Middleburg. I used to tell him he looked like a good looking version of Sonny Bono and he got a good laugh out of that! I know he will be missed, and you have my sympathy.

What a wonderful man, and positive influence on so many during his life! He could warm any heart with that smile of his, and his laughter make a dreary day sunny and bright. He will be truly missed, but always remain close in our hearts. We know what a joyful homecoming it must have been for him to reunite with Jiggs in Heaven. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all. God Bless!

I would like to express my deepest, heartfelt sympathy to the Tompkins family. I have many fond memories of Dr. "T" teasing me about Clemson. Of coarse he would wait until I was in the chair, with mouth wide open, defenseless, before he would start his antics. Dr. Tompkins was one of my Dad's oldest and dearest friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Linda and Sims and all the rest of the family:
We were terribly saddened at the news of Lynn's passing. What a great guy -- we had some wonderful times together -- the Purple Onion in NY where we got in ahead of the crowd because Lynn told Frankie to "look pregnant". The abortive boat trip to Green Turtle, the new outboard moter that wouldn't start, the tree leaves in the gas tank, etc, etc. Also, he was super help in SAO as well as being my very capable VP.
So many good memories. We will miss his smiling face. So sorry we can't be there today. Cal and Frankie

First I would like to give my condolences to the family. What a great bunch of people. I was in school with Charles at St. Joseph’s he was one of my best friends. We spent the night at each others houses when we were just kids. We drove our parents crazy. Mz. Tomkins seemed to tolerate us a lot more than other moms. What a sweet Lady! Dr. Tomkins was of course my Orthodontist along with everybody else my age. In fact I didn’t know there was other Orthodontist’s until I got older. Then I found out there was, his name is Sims. He and my brother Chuck also started school at St Joseph in the First Grade. What a great tradition! I remember when Dr. Tomkins put on my braces and let me tell you he had his hands full. I had the “Buckist” teeth in Columbia. I could stick my tongue through my two front teeth with plenty of room with no-problem. Dr. Tomkins had “THE BEST” personality there was! Now I know where Charles got his from. But anyway I remember I went in to Dr. Tomkins office for a “TIGHTING”or a “CHECKUP” on my braces and remember, I really had BUCK TEETH so he had to that to get them straightened out. I went home and decided the braces were just a little too tight and causing way too much pain and went out to the garage and got some wire cutters and cut the wires out from my braces. Well let me tell you that did not work. My teeth were still killing me after cutting them out. My mom was furious! Of course when I got to Dr. Tomkins office he put in another wire and just laughed at what I did. You know how he was! He always made you feel comfortable. Just like ALL the Tomkins Family. Great memories!

Dear Tompkins Family,

My deepest sympathy to you.

Dr. T was my orthodontist; my first visit being at 10 years old. My Uncle Pete (Asmer) referred me to him and I'm so glad he chose Dr. T. I often made the comment, he reminded me of Jerry Lewis because he was so funny.

May God's peace and comfort be with you.

Dear Sims,
So sorry to hear of your father's passing. You and your father always made me feel more than just a patient but that you also cared. Your father will surely be missed by all.

January 28, 2010

Dear Tompkins Family,

Dr. T was a great inspiration to me. He seemed to always have me laughing while his magical hands were in my mouth. I absolutely looked forward to regular visits to Middleburg. There were several years after my braces were removed that I kind of made an excuse to go back for a check up just to be able to visit with he,Nell and all the other wonderful staff.
I(and all the DiMaria's) will cherish the friendship of Doctor Linn and send our heartfelt sympathy to all the Tompkins Family !
