Linwood Payne Obituary

Linwood Payne, Jr.

May 19, 1937 - September 23, 2025

Linwood Evans Payne, Jr. (affectionately known as Tuck) passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, at the age of 88.

Tuck spent the last few years of his life at Morningside House, where he made an incredible impact on the facility staff and other residents. He was generous and compassionate and loved helping others. He was known at Morningside House as an "employee" and enjoyed working in the dining hall and assisting the nursing staff.

Tuck was married to his loving wife Edith for 62 years and was grief-stricken by her death in 2023. Tuck retired from the federal government, where he dedicated over 30 years of service to the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, VA. He continued to work at various service industry jobs until well into his 70s, where his influence and kindheartedness will be cherished forever. Tuck is survived by his son, Linwood Payne, III (also known as Tuck), and his wife, Theresa; two grandchildren, Lindsay (Johnny) and Dylan (Samantha); and five great-grandchildren. Burial will be private at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. The family would like to extend their grateful appreciation to the Legacy Hospice staff. In addition, the family extends a huge amount of gratitude for the love, affection, and support provided by Morningside House, not only at the time of his passing but for the past several years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the local SPCA to carry on Tuck's love of dogs. Tuck will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

I was lucky enough to meet and work around Tuck when I first started as a contractor at Dahlgren. He helped me often, and it was always my pleasure to enjoy his friendship. Earth has lost a great man. My sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed by many of us.
