Paul Funeral Home of Washington Obituary

Louis Plaster Forrest died on October 14, 2022, in his home surrounded by his wife, his three children, daughter-in-law and his faithful companion Nathan, a Boykin Spaniel.  He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest Graham “Red” and Hazel Plaster Forrest Jr., and his brother Ernest Graham Forrest III.  Prior to his retirement, Mr. Forrest was President and CEO of E.G. Forrest Company Food Distribution Service located in Winston-Salem NC, a family-owned business founded by his grandfather E.G. Forrest in 1920.

Mr. Forrest attended RJ Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC and went on to graduate from East Carolina University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics.  His lifelong passions were devoted to sports, in particular, golf and baseball.  He loved spending time on the golf course and the baseball fields with his two boys throughout their childhood and into their adult lives.  Later, he developed a passion for scuba diving and Harley Davidson motorcycles.  He traveled often to see his daughter in Grand Cayman to scuba dive with her.  His most memorable motorcycle trip was a cross country ride to Sturgis with some of his biker friends, visiting twenty-one states in twenty-three days.  His moto in life was “You only live once, so live with no regrets”.

Mr. Forrest was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, NC where he taught Sunday School for many years.  He also served in the Army National Guard.

Mr. Forrest retired to Washington, NC with his wife Sharon, to be close to East Carolina University and the Pirates.  Mr. Forrest served on the Pirate Club Executive Committee and was a member of the VanSant Society.  He loved going to ECU football games and was a dedicated ECU baseball fan.  He enjoyed many years being with his friends on the outfield berm known as The Jungle.  He always kept his own scorebook and was fondly known in The Jungle as Book Man.  He didn’t miss a home game and always wanted to see his Pirates make it to Omaha.

Mr. Forrest is survived by his wife Sharon, three children Dorothy “Dee” Forrest Duggan and husband Chris, Kevin Louis Forrest and wife Anne, and Edgar “Eddy” Sherrill Forrest and wife Emily, seven grandchildren, Caroline and Patrick Duggan, Connor and Lily Grace Forrest, and Charlotte, Bland and Hunter Forrest, all of Winston-Salem, NC.  Mr. Forrest is also survived by his cousin William “Bill” Plaster and wife Dawn of Washington, NC.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution to a charity that Mr. Forrest chose would be appreciated.  ECU Educational Foundation Pirate Club, Ward Sports Medicine Building, Suite 304, Greenville, NC 27858-4353, The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 877, Washington, NC 27889, Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, NC 27889, Betsy Bailey Nelson Animal Shelter, 3931 Hwy 264 E, Washington, NC 27889, or Community Home Care and Hospice, 222 West Stewart Parkway, Suite 100, Washington, NC 27889.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 21, 2022, at Paul Funeral Home, 900 John Small Avenue, Washington, NC from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.  A memorial service will be held at Grace Church, 1776 N Market Street, Washington, NC at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 22, 2022.  Private interment will be held at a later date in the Forrest family grave site at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, NC.

Not sure what to say?

I have such great memories being with the Forrest family over the years. When I moved to Winston-Salem the Forrest family accepted me with open arms. Louis always made me feel so welcome at his home! I truly love him for that! He made me feel great every time I saw him. Louis was a great man and he will forever hold a special place in my heart. Kevin , Eddy and Dee you and your families are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, T.J. McKiernan

Although I attended Gray High School, I had many friends at Reynolds since my cousin Susan went there. That is where I first met Louis. We knew each other but that was about it. We were getting ready to get very close. We both joined the Army Reserve unit on Stadium Dr. 108th Transportation . It would not be long before we received our orders for basic training. Reporting in on December 11, 1970. We were confident we would be sent to Ft. Bragg or Ft. Jackson. Nope. We were headed west. All...

Dear Forrest Family, We send you our deepest condolences. Thank you for thinking of the Salvation Army in your time of grief. God Bless You and prayers of comfort for your family in your time of loss. Sincerely, Pastor Allen Adkins Salvation Army

Sending thoughts and prayers to Sharon and family. I am grateful for all the times Louis and I walked the golf course with our dogs in the mornings and evenings as we solved all the world’s problems and discussed life in general and the lessons we have learned. Such good memories!

We are so saddened to hear of Louis´s passing. When he lived in Winston Salem, our boys, TJ and Kevin, were almost inseparable with lots of sleepovers at each other´s homes along with their escapades of getting in trouble together at a young age of 12! Louis always treated our son as one of his own. We have fond memories of him and always enjoyed talking with him. He was a very caring and generous true gentleman. We developed a fast friendship, getting to know him and his wonderful...

Condolences to Sharon and the kids. I was with Louis on his cross-country Harley trip, along with Randy Wells, Cam Lane and my dad, Bobby. We still talk about that trip, and it was in 1998. Lost touch with Louis when he moved away, but I’ll always remember him fondly. Good man!!
