Louis Forrest Obituary

Forrest, Louis

November 8, 1946 - October 14, 2022

Louis Plaster Forrest died on October 14, 2022, in his home surrounded by his wife, his three children, daughter-in-law and his faithful companion Nathan, a Boykin spaniel. He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest Graham "Red" and Hazel Plaster Forrest Jr., and his brother Ernest Graham Forrest III. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Forrest was president and CEO of E.G. Forrest Company Food Distribution Service located in Winston-Salem, NC, a family-owned business founded by his grandfather E.G. Forrest in 1920.

Mr. Forrest attended RJ Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC and went on to graduate from East Carolina University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. His lifelong passions were devoted to sports, in particular, golf and baseball. He loved spending time on the golf course and the baseball fields with his two boys throughout their childhood and into their adult lives. Later, he developed a passion for scuba diving and Harley Davidson motorcycles. He traveled often to see his daughter in Grand Cayman to scuba dive with her. His most memorable motorcycle trip was a cross country ride to Sturgis with some of his biker friends, visiting twenty-one states in twenty-three days. His moto in life was "You only live once, so live with no regrets."

Mr. Forrest was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, NC, where he taught Sunday School for many years. He also served in the Army National Guard.

Mr. Forrest retired to Washington, NC with his wife Sharon, to be close to East Carolina University and the Pirates. Mr. Forrest served on the Pirate Club Executive Committee and was a member of the VanSant Society. He loved going to ECU football games and was a dedicated ECU baseball fan. He enjoyed many years being with his friends on the outfield berm known as the Jungle. He always kept his own scorebook and was fondly known in the Jungle as Book Man. He didn't miss a home game and always wanted to see his Pirates make it to Omaha.

Mr. Forrest is survived by his wife Sharon, three children, Dorothy "Dee" Forrest Duggan and husband Chris, Kevin Louis Forrest and wife Anne, and Edgar "Eddy" Sherrill Forrest and wife Emily, seven grandchildren, Caroline and Patrick Duggan, Connor and Lily Grace Forrest, and Charlotte, Bland and Hunter Forrest, all of Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Forrest is also survived by his cousin William "Bill" Plaster and wife Dawn of Washington, NC.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution to a charity that Mr. Forrest chose would be appreciated: ECU Educational Foundation Pirate Club, Ward Sports Medicine Building, Suite 304, Greenville, NC 27858-4353, The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 877, Washington, NC 27889, Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, NC 27889, Betsy Bailey Nelson Animal Shelter, 3931 Hwy 264 E, Washington, NC 27889, or Community Home Care and Hospice, 222 West Stewart Parkway, Suite 100, Washington, NC 27889.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 21, 2022, at Paul Funeral Home, 900 John Small Avenue, Washington, NC from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Grace Church, 1776 N. Market Street, Washington, NC at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2022. Private interment will be held at a later date in the Forrest family gravesite at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, NC.

Condolences may be sent online to the family at www.paulfuneralhome.com.

I have such great memories being with the Forrest family over the years. When I moved to Winston-Salem the Forrest family accepted me with open arms. Louis always made me feel so welcome at his home! I truly love him for that! He made me feel great every time I saw him. Louis was a great man and he will forever hold a special place in my heart. Kevin , Eddy and Dee you and your families are in my thoughts and prayers.

Although I attended Gray High School, I had many friends at Reynolds since my cousin Susan went there. That is where I first met Louis. We knew each other but that was about it. We were getting ready to get very close. We both joined the Army Reserve unit on Stadium Dr. 108th Transportation . It would not be long before we received our orders for basic training. Reporting in on December 11, 1970. We were confident we would be sent to Ft. Bragg or Ft. Jackson. Nope. We were headed west. All the way to Ft. Ord in Monterey, California. Quite the surprise. Actually, this was probably the most scenic and beautiful fort in the country. So Louis and I spend the next 5 months together. I still have our platoon photo. We had quite a few memories while training. Once we got out of basic training, we continued with AIT training....driving trucks and jeeps. Stayed in Monterey. Now we could leave on the weekend. We'd take off to Carmel and find a cheap room. We were walking on the beach one day and noticed a golf course above the cliffs. We climbed that cliff and to our surprise it was "Pebble Beach". We were delighted, but were sure we would be ran off quickly. Not so. Finally, we were walking down the 18th hole to the clubhouse. Kept thinking?? Why hasn't someone run us off. Well, we find out that "Pebble Beach" is a "public" course. We were shocked. So we decided to go in the clubhouse, order us a beer and sit on the 2nd story veranda overlooking the 18th green and the bay. Louis and I thought we were in HEAVEN. It just didn't get any better than this. So we became their weekend slackers until the Army flew up back home in April. Didn't see Clint Eastwood or any stars in Carmel. But it was obvious we were military, and the town's hospitality wasn't the greatest. But I can assure you, Louis and I look back on those days at Ft Ord being very special. I ran into Louis over the years. Met his brother who set quite a high standard for Louis....think he went to the Air Force Academy. Unfortunately, I had not seen Louis for decades. What would I give to reminisce about our Army adventure. I regret that I did not see his obituary until today. I normally look at them weekly but I guess I was tardy. I will miss my Army buddy. He passed away on my birthday. May he be in the hands of a forgiving God.

Sending thoughts and prayers to Sharon and family. I am grateful for all the times Louis and I walked the golf course with our dogs in the mornings and evenings as we solved all the world’s problems and discussed life in general and the lessons we have learned. Such good memories!

We are so saddened to hear of Louis´s passing.
When he lived in Winston Salem, our boys, TJ and Kevin, were almost inseparable with lots of sleepovers at each other´s homes along with their escapades of getting in trouble together at a young age of 12! Louis always treated our son as one of his own.
We have fond memories of him and always enjoyed talking with him. He was a very caring and generous true gentleman. We developed a fast friendship, getting to know him and his wonderful children, Dee, Kevin and Eddy, at baseball games and at Forsyth CC.
We will cherish our memories of him and his family for the rest of our lives.
With Sympathy,
Tom and Anne McKiernan

Condolences to Sharon and the kids. I was with Louis on his cross-country Harley trip, along with Randy Wells, Cam Lane and my dad, Bobby. We still talk about that trip, and it was in 1998. Lost touch with Louis when he moved away, but I’ll always remember him fondly. Good man!!

Louis was a true and proud Southern gentleman! His wit rivaled his intelligence - both witnessed in his conversations with his brother at their visits at the "Man Cave" in Pinehurst. Louis had a seeming roughness to him but once you knew him you knew a loveable and caring man that was a lot of fun to be around. He welcomed me as family when I was with his brother and we became very close. I will cherish the memories of my friendship and good times with Louis. He will be missed. With love and understanding, Alyce Gaines, fondly known by Louis as "2"

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Forrest. Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy goes out to his loving family. He was an amazing and honorable business man. As restaurant owners, we feel so blessed to have known and learned from him. Mr. Forrest was a man of his wordif he told you he was going to take care of something; it was done. He always gave excellent advice at the EG Forrest Food Shows. He often stopped in to visit our restaurant on his way to Pinehurst to see his Brother.
We wish you all love and peace during this difficult time.

Louis was a very good friend. We enjoyed playing golf at a Cypress Landing and at the country Club of North Carolina. We tailgated for many ECU Pirates football games, but almost never missed being in The Jungle for ECU Baseball. He was an avid fan and student of the game. A real gentle man and patriot that will be missed by many!

I had the privilege of working with Louis, in the last few years of the independence of his beloved family food service distribution organization. Louis took very personally his responsibilities for the dedicated individuals that were provided for, as a consequence of their employment with EG Forrest Company. Mostly, I will always remember the heartfelt conversations we shared in regards to his pride in- and great love for- his children and their respective families. I believe you can measure a man’s character by his love and dedication to his family and, from that vantage point, Louis was faithfully devoted and his influences will continue to live on through them. My sincere condolences to Sharon and the extended Forrest family.
