Louis Prejean Obituary

Louis Sebastian Prejean Jr., born on March 16, 1944, was called by Our Lord Jesus Christ to Heaven on January 3, 2021. He was 76 years old. Louis passed away peacefully surrounded by family due to complications of covid-19. Louis loved life, his family and friends, and he lit up a room with his warm smile and infectious laugh. A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Louis graduated from Catholic High School in 1962 where he was the first school mascot. He was a steadfast parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, and he gave his time and devotion to many community outreach programs including the Holy Name Society, Alhambra, and Knights of Columbus 969, serving as Grand Knight for three terms. Louis' life was dedicated to helping those with disabilities and encouraging others to increase their Catholic faith. In carrying out this mission, he served as the State President and Regional Vice President of the National Board of ARC, a Chairman of the Board of Baton Rouge Detox Rehabilitation Center, he was co-founder of Special Children's Foundation and Community Network Inc. (CNI) and BRAVO Inc., and he was an Administrator at the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge. Louis' career was synced with these same endeavors. After closing his beloved Pirogue's Cajun Restaurant, he worked tirelessly for various government and Catholic agencies, ending his career as the proud Development Director for Catholic Community Radio since 2012. Throughout all of these avenues, he has touched so many people in their journey with faith. Louis had many other passions including cooking, hunting, beekeeping, gardening, traveling, and most of all, he loved being with his family. Sharing his other passions with his family and friends brought him great joy. He always "cooked with love" to share with his family and friends. The same love was offered in the form of hunting trips and gifts of honey, fruit, and vegetables. Louis was a true Southern Gentleman, right down to the seersucker suit and bowtie. We will miss you and all of your works- Lou, Dad, Poppy, Unc, Uncle Lou, Fifi, Luigi, Sugar Daddy, and last but not least, Darlin'. Louis is preceded in death by his parents, Louis Sebastian, Sr. and Gusta Mae Prejean, his sister, Mary Ann Prejean Antrobus, and his grandson, Michael Byrd. He is survived by his loving wife, Amy, of 30 years; his sister Sr. Helen Prejean; children Marcy Prejean Maurer (Tommy), Angela Begue Hammett (Jody), Julie Prejean Byrd (Brian), Brian Begue (Missy); grandchildren T.J., Kyle, Lucas, William, Jackson, Caroline, Anna Claire, Benjamin, James, Harrison, Carson, Anna Katherine and Alexander; Great granddaughter Elin; and nephews and niece, Helen, Don, Steve, Michael, and Robb Antrobus. The family would like to thank the many healthcare workers who cared for Louis at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center, especially Dr. Roy Culotta, Peggy Blouin, RN, and the Respiratory Therapy Team. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., with a Rosary to take place at 6:00 p.m. A funeral mass will follow the next day, Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Ave. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Catholic Community Radio, www.catholiccommunityradio.org or The Sister Dulce Foundation, Inc., www.cypressspringsprayercenter.org. Louis will truly be missed. Louis always had a smile on his face and he was always willing to help anyone. Louis became a friend as soon as he joined Catholic Community Radio; what an asset he was for the station! I already miss you my friend! Pray for us Louis!

How can one repay a friendship like Louis offered? Few, if any, have such a gift, and Louis will always be remembered as a true friend of the Lord and thus of all of us. Thank you my friend for the laughter, the joy, the faith and the example of what it means to be a brother of the Lord. We need your fervent prayers now more than ever. Cannot wait to behold together what you now see.
