LUCY BRUENE Obituary

Lucy Gay Lyon Lucas Bruene, of Platte City, Missouri, died peacefully in her sleep, early Sunday morning, February 6, 2011. Lucy was born on July 29, 1930, in Los Angeles, California, to Frances Fox and John Lyon. She spent her childhood and teen years in the Mississippi Delta and in Baltimore, Maryland, where she attended high school. Lucy graduated from Duke University, having majored in English. While doing graduate work at the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, Lucy met the first of the two wonderful men who would be in her life, fellow student William C. (Bill) Lucas, Jr. They married in August, 1953, and settled two years later in Kansas City, Missouri. In the mid-1970's, they moved to Platte City. Together, Bill and Lucy had six children: Charles Edward (Charlie) Lucas, William C. (Will) Lucas, III, Katharine (Kathy) Lengle, Virginia Stevenson (Ginnie) Lucas, Frances Elizabeth Lucas (Cheryl Hahnfeld), and Louise Lucas (Mike Elbein). From their children, Lucy was blessed with six grandchildren: Frances Lucas, Matt and David Lengle, and Phil, Kris and Lucy Elbein. Bill Lucas was a loving and supportive husband. Sadly, he died in December, 1985. In 1986, Lucy was introduced to the second great man in her life, Kenneth Bruene, a widower, with five adult children and several grandchildren. They married in December, 1988, and had many happy years together. Throughout the recent years of Lucy's poor health, Ken was a devoted and caring husband. Lucy did extensive volunteer work and in the early 1980's, obtained a Masters Degree in Counseling, from U.M.K.C. She enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, and time with her family and many terrific friends. Two memorial services are planned. One will be at 1:00 pm, on Saturday, February 19, at Country Club United Methodist Church, 57th and Wornall, Kansas City, Missouri. A reception prior to the service will start at 11:30 a.m., in the church library. A private burial will follow the service. The other service will take place at 10:30 am, on Friday, February 18, at the Platte City United Methodist Church, 14040 N Highway. A light lunch will follow that service. Friends are encouraged to attend whichever service is most convenient. In lieu of flowers, Lucy's family suggests that contributions be made to the organization which provides a meaningful quality of life to Charlie and many other individuals with developmental disabilities: Community Living Opportunities, P.O. Box 14395, Lenexa, KS, 66285. Condolences may be made at www.mtmoriah-freeman.com. Mt Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home. 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO 64131. (816) 942-2004
