Manuel Brown Obituary

Manuel Brown, 89, passed away on Sept. 8. Manuel "Manny" Brown was born in Bogue Chitto, MS, June 22, 1930, to Fannie Lee Brown and Manuel Brown. He was the second child of a family of five children (four boys and one girl). He went to school at the Lincoln Training School through the 11th grade where his mother was a school teacher. In 1947, he finished high school in Vallejo, at the age of 16. A commercial came on the radio saying, "Get a career in the Air". After further listening to the radio, he found out they were talking about the United States Air Force. He took the test and did very well on it and pursued the possibility. In 1950 in Vallejo, stationed at Travis AFB, he met Emelda Jane Smith, of New Orleans, LA, whom he was happily married to for over 58 years before her passing in February 2011. Manuel and family moved to Spokane, WA, in 1960, where he was stationed at Fairchild AFB and worked in Civil Engineering. During these next military years, he spent time in Da Nang, Vietnam for a year and then lived at Zaragoza AFB, Spain, with his family for about three years where in his spare time, he coached basketball. He and his family moved back to Fairchild AFB where he retired in March 1971. Prior to his retirement from the military, he worked for Washington Water Power Company which is now called Avista. During the 19 ½ years he spent working for Avista, he became a foreman which took him out of town weeks at a time building power substations. Manuel finally retired after he retired. In 1960, he and his family joined Calvary Baptist Church where he became an integral part of the Deacon Board, Trustee, Advisory Boards, Sunday School Superintendent/Teacher, Bible Study Leader and was recently inducted as Deacon Emeritus until his passing. He loved to sing, enjoyed carpentry, working with his hands, making Kinaras, playing basketball (his favorite) and baseball, and watching all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in sports. He played basketball against the Harlem Globe Trotters in 1950.Manuel is survived by his two sons, Dwan and Timothy (Spokane, WA); son, Manuel III and daughter-in-law, Rhonda (Issaquah, WA); daughter, Inez (Tampa, FL); brother, Archie Brown (Tucson, AZ); step sister, Elnorah Cooley (Vallejo); 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three grandsons-in-law, three granddaughters-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Wife, Emelda and daughter, Emandaline Kelley preceded him in death. Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home. Home-going service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 203 East Third Ave., Spokane, WA 99202 on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 9 a.m. Entombment at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Spokane, P.O. Box 2215, Spokane, WA 99210-2215 or www.caringbridge.org.

Pops,

I will always be your little girl who shared peanut butter homecomings, long talks, Dad and Daughter Dances, love, trips, connections dads and daughters should have as far as being a protector, provider, professer, confidant, mentor, an inspiration, and my first love and most of all you were a God-fearing man.

I will miss you, but will always keep you in my heart.

Love forever until we see chuthers.

The Lord came and took him.
He plucked a flower to put in his heavenly vase.
No more pain and suffering on this earthly place.
He has been a strong tower
But he was taken in that hour.
Manuel Brown, Sr., a community man
Took his last breath and his last stand.
The kindest of words were quietly said,
While he laid sometimes responsive in his bed.
Funny thing is as he laid,
Total attention by him was paid.
His breathing would change
But that wasn't strange.
He knew who speaking
As their words were leaking.
If you were stroking his hand,
Your attention he'd command.
If you were in the room whispering,
He'd be right there listening.
He'd respond in his own way.
To things we might say.
At times he'd talk in his sleep.
Some words were very deep.
He'd be telling stories
Saying to me not to worry.
He'd muster up might
Saying, I see the light.
What else do you see?
People around me.
He'd put out his hand
That gentle man
Grasping at air,
But he knew who was there.
I'm telling you this
Cause in this life he'd be missed.
But the life he lived
And the teachings he'd give
This Godly man
God had his plan
Ever since birth
God knew his worth
God gave us this seed
Who never became a weed
He was strong and smart
God knew his heart
God had his back
Whenever he was under attack.
He loved and protected his wife
And his five children he gave life.
My father was so dignified.
Even by his words you'd abide.
He might have been quiet
But his words you'd want to live by it.
He counselled and mentored
His words were not splintered.
You'd sit and just wonder
Where he got his quiet thunder.
This man will be missed,
But you will never dismiss
How after 89 years
Through his toil and silent tears
As you know, In times like these
He'd be on bended knees
As God had Smiled on Him
He may have once been lost in sin
But his Jesus took him in
And through all of his pain
He Won't Complain
Having his Soul is Anchored in the Lord
While he is encompassed in his word
Mr. Brown will have us live Today like there's no Tomorrow
And take a Stand because the Storm is Passing over. No more sorrow.

Nez

Manuel Brown who I knew as Deacon Brown, was a loving caring amazing father, husband and wonderful person
his gentle soft spoken personality inspired me. His wife Mother Brown and him attended the EWU football games with my husband and me
and after his wife past deacon Brown continued to join us up until the last two years it just got to heard on his legs to walk up the stairs
but he will always be remembered as our football friend and I will miss him.
