MARJORY McGUIRE Obituary


MARJORY GRAFF McGUIRE  
Died April 25, 2017 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was born March 8, 1919 in Bound Brook, New Jersey and graduated, at age 19, from Hunter College in New York with a degree in Mathematics. She worked in the Physics Department at Yale University and later at the American Institute of Physics. In 1943, she joined the WAVES, serving as an ensign and later lieutenant in the US Navy, working on underwater ordnance research in Washington DC. In her free time she took flying lessons and learned to pilot a small plane.In 1945, she married John R. McGuire, a career Forest Service employee who later became Chief of the USFS. Due to John's work they lived in Orono and Wells, Maine, Philadelphia, PA, Orinda, CA, and Falls Church, VA and, after her husband's retirement, at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD. Marjory accompanied John on trips to Russia, Germany, Italy, Argentina and Indonesia and helped to represent the US at international forestry meetings. In 2014, she moved to Raleigh to be closer to family. She is survived by a daughter, Joan of Raleigh and a niece, Marcia Tonnesen of Setauket, NY.  Services Private. Memorial contributions may be made to the John R. McGuire Endowment, established by Marjory and the Forest History Society to support preservation of USFS history and oral history interviews with agency employees and partners.
