Mark R Bickley

I still recall serving as a Ward Executive Secretary not long after my mission. I was attending a monthly stake bishopric meeting in the old Stake Center on 29th and Southeast BLVD. On this particular evening he had been asked to read over changes made to the Church Handbook of Instructions - he was to read the previous policy in question and then how it read after the changes. Pretty much he just kept his eyes on the pages in front of himself - on a table-top podium and would only glance...

I always called him President Bickley.

When I went on my mission he set me apart. He was in the middle of something so I went to the house. He had on orange colored coveralls, with a cast on his wrist! Definitely memorable.

After they got home from their mission, he gave several firesides around Spokane. If I was in town and knew of the fireside I would go to hear their missions stories and for President to recite those epic Australian poems from memory.

At the meeting where he was released as stake president, (I was the organist), he shared his testimony and commented on what life would be like now. The President referred to Peter after the Lord's crucifixion and quoting said: "I go a fishing."

He will always be President Bickley to me. His influence for good in my life is tremendous. Both Mark and Margie we our role models and mentors for the last 40 years. We love Mark and will miss him. He truly was one of the noble and great ones I have known in my life.

Words can't adequately express the love and appreciation Linda and me feel for Mark. He has been such a positive influence in our lives with his selfless service and wonderful example. The members of Spokane Second Ward and Spokane Stake have been the recipients of half a century of his dedicated leadership, for which we are eternally grateful. Thank you old friend!
