Mark BICKLEY Obituary

BICKLEY, Mark R.

Mark R. Bickley was born August 12, 1921 in Panguitch, Utah. He was the eldest of two sons born to Marcus and Mary Moselle Norton Bickley. When he was three years old, his family relocated to Salt Lake City, but he spent his summers in Panguitch where he devel- oped a love for fishing and hunting. He attended public schools, graduating from Granite High School in 1939. He married his high school sweetheart, Margie Jackson in 1942 in Fresno, CA. He served as an Army Staff Sergeant in the India Burma Theatre during World War II, supervising the installation and maintenance of observation radio stations. He accepted employment with Burroughs Corp., a manufacturer of office accounting equipment and eventually large computers. Mark was transferred to Spokane where they raised their five children. His hobbies included gardening, woodworking, fly tying, genealogy and family history. Mark loved camping with family and friends. He was a devoted member of the Boy Scouts of America, eventually serving as the Inland Empire Council Commissioner. He received a Silver Beaver for his many years of service. A lifelong devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held many leadership positions where he developed a great joy for serving others. A friend he served with described him as being "courageous, loving, stalwart, giving, forgiving, a wonderful man." He will be missed by many. Mark passed away on February 15, 2018 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Margie Jackson Bickley and their oldest daughter, Patricia Ann Bickley. He is survived by daughters, Mary Ann and her husband Lon Gibby of Colbert, WA; Marsha and her husband Steve Holding of Spokane, WA; Valerie and her husband Terry Williams of Colville, WA and his son Richard and his wife Cari of Woods Cross, UT; as well as 17 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 24, beginning with a viewing at 9:00 a.m. followed by the service at 10:00 a.m. at the LDS Sitka Chapel, 808 E. Sitka Ave, in Spokane. The Family invites you to share your memories of Mark at www.heritagefunerals.com

I still recall serving as a Ward Executive Secretary not long after my mission. I was attending a monthly stake bishopric meeting in the old Stake Center on 29th and Southeast BLVD. On this particular evening he had been asked to read over changes made to the Church Handbook of Instructions - he was to read the previous policy in question and then how it read after the changes. Pretty much he just kept his eyes on the pages in front of himself - on a table-top podium and would only glance up every now and again. He got to one particular entry and read: "Embezzlement of church funds: Previously the dollar amount requiring a disciplinary council was $50.00, now the amount is $500.00" At this point he looked over the top of his bi-focals and said: "So brethren, you can lift a little but not a lot." And then proceeded on to the next item.

I always called him President Bickley.

When I went on my mission he set me apart. He was in the middle of something so I went to the house. He had on orange colored coveralls, with a cast on his wrist! Definitely memorable.

After they got home from their mission, he gave several firesides around Spokane. If I was in town and knew of the fireside I would go to hear their missions stories and for President to recite those epic Australian poems from memory.

Both very gracious when I would walk over of an evening to visit.

At the meeting where he was released as stake president, (I was the organist), he shared his testimony and commented on what life would be like now. The President referred to Peter after the Lord's crucifixion and quoting said: "I go a fishing."

Words can't adequately express the love and appreciation Linda and me feel for Mark. He has been such a positive influence in our lives with his selfless service and wonderful example. The members of Spokane Second Ward and Spokane Stake have been the recipients of half a century of his dedicated leadership, for which we are eternally grateful. Thank you old friend!
