Not sure what to say?

I just found out that Dr. Shaffrey had passed in December 2024. He operated on our daughter, Amanda Wright, several times to remove a tumor she developed in her first year at Virginia Tech. She is doing well today, in a large part, due to his outstanding abilities. His kindness, dedication, and professionalism got all of us through some very difficult times and I will be ever greatful that she was in such caring and skillful hands.

Dr Shaffrey was a blessed man. God truely gifted him with skills like no other. He did surgery on me the day of the earthquake in 2011. He was in the middle of my surgery when it hit. He was fishing out a fragment of a disc that had broken in my cervical spine. His hands were steady even with everything shaking around him. I WALKED out that hospital after that surgery! My family was in the cafeteria at the time and ran for safety. He also operated on my father twice in the last 3 years,...

Dr. Shaffrey helped me so much. He helped me to understand that I had a birth defect that caused me so much pain and lack of mobility in my life. He operated on me in April 2020. This surgery dramatically decreased my pain level, and it helped me to walk again. We were in the process of scheduling another surgery when I discovered he had passed. He was a great healer and an almost larger than life person. I will never forget him.

Dr Shaffrey performed back surgery on me back in 2010 and it gave me a new life for sure. Can not say enough good about this man. So sad to hear of his passing.

Dr. Shaffrey was a blessing to me, he gave me my life back after I was in a terrible bicycle accident at the age of 35. When I first met Dr. Shaffrey, I was in terrible pain and unable to live an active lifestyle. I had been an athlete and active person my entire life. In 2021, I had my first surgery by Dr. Shaffrey at UVA. Due to the damage from the bicycle accident, the first surgery did not relieve my pain. Dr. Shaffrey never gave up on helping me. In the spring of 2023, he performed...

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I was a patient of Dr. Shaffrey for a few years. He was an excellent Physician who really cared about his patients. He performed two back surgeries on me, one of them lasting 12 hours. I will always remember him as kind, compassionate, and professional. He did a wonderful procedure that I will always be grateful for. I will surely miss my Doctor and friend.

We shared 15 eventful years at UVA. He lived life to the fullest, and was an incredible inspiration to all who came into contact with him. My condolences to Caroline and all of his family. Mark will be greatly missed in this world...

God bless Dr. Shaffrey's loved ones at this time. What a beautiful obituary! A beautiful man. I never met him...but was scheduled to see him in January for the first time. A friend in Harrisonburg had a back surgery with him and recommended that I see him too. So I was waiting to meet him. Rest in Peace Dr. Shaffrey and thank you for all you did. I feel I will benefit from the good things you taught your colleagues.
