Martha Greer Obituary

Martha Greer

December 4, 1947 - September 12, 2025

Martha Emilie "Mimi" Greer, a resident of Davenport, Iowa, passed away Friday, September 12, 2025, at Saint Francis University Hospital in Peoria, Ill.

Visitation will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Weerts Funeral Home. The memorial service will be the same day and place, starting at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Rivermont Collegiate or Scott County Humane Society.

Mimi was born on December 4, 1947, in Chicago, Ill., to Jean and John Greer. She began her lengthy career as a lifelong learner by attending McKinley Elementary and Sudlow Junior High Schools.

She later graduated from St. Katherine's School in Davenport along with her life-long best friend, Kathy Anderson. It was this St. Katherine's experience that sparked her love for language, art, and learning, which continued throughout her adult life.

Mimi furthered her academic career by studying foreign language and art at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and the University of Texas in Austin.

She later earned a master's degree from Drake University, which enabled her to teach Spanish in Odessa, Texas, as well as in the Davenport Community School District at Frank L. Smart, Walcott, and Williams Intermediate Schools.

Her students were awarded the opportunity to expand their horizons through field trips to the Art Institute of Chicago and authentic Spanish food and culture. Mimi retired from teaching in 2008.

Throughout her life, Mimi continued to enhance her multicultural experiences through extended travel to Mexico, South America, and Europe. Her favorite destination was Egypt. She also lived and worked in Chicago and Florida. Mimi married twice, to Cody Godwin in 1969, and later Luis Valencia in 1981.

More recently, she continued her support for the Quad-City Symphony and the Figge Art Museum and participated in several book clubs. Mimi loved opera, classical, and blues music. She enjoyed playing golf, practicing yoga, reading, and watching the birds from her deck.

Those left to honor her memory include her siblings, John (Caroline) Greer of Le Claire, Iowa, James (Diane) Greer of Temecula, Calif., Stephanie (John) Bilokonsky of Strongsville, Ohio, and sister-in-law Jill Greer of Phoenix, Ariz.; her nieces, Jenny Chapman of Phoenix, Ariz., Melissa Greer of Davenport, Iowa, Katy, Jessica, and Jaclyn Greer of Denver, Colo.; her nephews, Bob (Rachel) Bilokonsky of Troy, Ohio, and Mike Bilokonsky of Cincinnati, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mimi will be greatly missed by her family, many friends, and former students, and most of all her beloved dog, Coco Chanel. May she rest in peace.

I had the great honor and privilege to work with Mimi at Walcott School.
She was always upbeat and loved each and every one of her students. It was a huge task to organize all those trips to the art institute, but she always felt it was so important for her students to see and experience this field trip. She worked very hard to see this come to fruition.
Mimi was always classy and a real lady! She was one of the first to make me feel welcome at Walcott School.
My sympathy and prayers are with all of her family.
My life was blessed to know her.
Rest in sweet peace Mimi!

Mimi was not only a landscape customer of mine but I considered her a friend as well. She was always so kind and soft spoken. She loved her Coco, her companion in life, who will so miss her Momma. Mimi had us come over numerous times a season to weed, plant new plants and just take care of all of the outside work that she couldn't do. She loved it when I would cut a few stems off of her Rose shrub that was up on her back hill landscape bed. She just loved the sweet fragrance of the Roses for her vase and also her favorites, Lily of the Valley. We planted some Mums for her the day she went to the hospital and she seemed healthy and in good spirits per usual, so to hear of her struggles over the last 2 weeks and her passing, I can hardly believe it. I will miss her voice, her laugh and her smile. Prayers to her family. I am sharing in your grief and will never forget her.
