Martin remains in my mind and heart as an iconic example of what it means to be an honorable member of the human race. He was extraordinarily kind to me, and I cherish his memory always.

I learned today from David, of Martin's passing and was extremely sorry to hear this. Our hearts go out to you all.

More than once when we were talking about honor and duty and some people's unfortunate choices, he'd look me straight in the eye and say softly, "It simply isn't done". One of the last things he said to me was with a chuckle: "You're your mother's daughter."

I am so terribly, terribly sorry about the loss of this lovely man and the grief my friend, Lois Lowry, is now experiencing. I simply don't have the words to express it.
