Martin Small Obituary

SMALL, Martin I. A lifelong resident of Boston and Cambridge, died peacefully at his Brattle Street home on May 17th after a short illness. Born in Brookline, MA, on October 12, 1926, he graduated from Brookline High School, began college at Cornell, then enlisted in the US Army late in World War II. He served as a medic and paratrooper before returning to Cornell in 1946 to complete his education. For many years he worked in the insurance industry, retiring as a partner with Child Savory-Haward Insurance Agency in 1993. In his retirement years he played tennis, studied music, was a member of the Cambridge Police Review and Advisory Board, and worked at a number of volunteer jobs, tutoring in English and doing money management for Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services. Pre-deceased by his daughter Jennifer, he is survived by his three sons, Eric, Daniel, and Andrew; five grandchildren; a brother, David Small; his companion of over thirty years, Lois Lowry; and countless friends. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama, or the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in Newton, Massachusetts. A celebration of his life will be held in the summer.

Martin remains in my mind and heart as an iconic example of what it means to be an honorable member of the human race. He was extraordinarily kind to me, and I cherish his memory always.

I'd know that smile anywhere. Just glad that Martin and Lois had those thirty-some fascinating years together. Phyllis Naylor (Gaithersburg, Maryland)

Lois and the Small family,

I learned today from David, of Martin's passing and was extremely sorry to hear this. Our hearts go out to you all.

More than once when we were talking about honor and duty and some people's unfortunate choices, he'd look me straight in the eye and say softly, "It simply isn't done". One of the last things he said to me was with a chuckle: "You're your mother's daughter."

I am so terribly, terribly sorry about the loss of this lovely man and the grief my friend, Lois Lowry, is now experiencing. I simply don't have the words to express it.
