I just discovered this obit page by chance. At the time of Marvin's death, my wife Rita Dove and I were on a sabbatical abroad, and when we returned to the States, the Covid pandemic was gearing up. We had known Marvin since 1981, when he was English dept. chair at ASU and hired my wife for her first full time faculty position plus secured an adjunct professorship for me as well. After we'd left Arizona in 1989, we would stay in touch with him and Jill, and after Jill's death we'd visit Marvin whenever we got to Tempe -- last a few years ago after our daughter (who'd left Arizona at the age of six) joined the faculty of ASU herself and is now teaching in the very English Dept. that Marvin headed so brilliantly all those years ago when she was born.
So many good memories of Marvin! So much gratefulness to him who was a large influence on the trajectory of our life!

Professor. Friend. Mentor. Scholar. Writer. Inspiration. Marvin did as much as anyone to expose the genius of Herman Melville to the world. And he did much more than most to make his students feel their thoughts mattered to the world of letters. He added meaning to our lives that will never be lost.
With Love. We are dust and dreams.
A long goodbye from a former student.

I know he is watching over us. I was honored and proud to assist in the care of a brilliant, humorous, caring individual. Every person that ever met Dr. Fisher ended up obtaining some type of knowledge, advice, and or sense of knowing this man touched your heart. He consumed a huge part of my heart. I have never met an individual who was so influential and humble and cared for the people he came in contact with. I am truly honored and have the upmost respect for him and what he represented and accomplished in his 92 years on earth. His memory will live on forever and NEVER forgotten ❤

Even though we haven't seen one another for many years, I will miss Marv. He and my husband Jim began teaching at ASU the same year (1958) and Marvin and Jill were our good friends for a very long time.
