Mary Buxton Obituary

GREENVILLE -- We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our mother, Mary Louise Buxton, 98. She passed at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville. Mary was born on July 26, 1927, in Darke County to the late Carl and Ella Dohse.

In addition to her parents, Mary is also preceded in death by her husband, George; infant son, John Paul; brothers, Paul Dohse of Ravenna, and John Dohse of Greenville; and daughter-in-law, Lyn (Simmons) Buxton of Dayton.

Mary is survived by daughter, Jenny of Virginia; sons, Daniel of Dayton, Thomas and wife, Taunya (Brumbaugh) of Versailles and Robert of Willshire; granddaughter, Traci (Jesse) Dobbelaere; 2 great grandchildren, Wesley and Kara Dobbelaere of Bowling Green; and a sister, Joanne (Jim) Campbell of San Jose, California.

Mary attended Ansonia Local Schools, graduating in 1945. On December 18, 1948, she married George Buxton at St. John Lutheran Church in Greenville, and they made a home on Reed Avenue in Versailles, where they lived their entire lives until George's passing in 1996. She was employed by the Versailles School District when the boys were young, working in the elementary school cafeteria. When the boys were older, she fulfilled a dream by attending the Dayton School of Practical Nursing, graduating in 1972. Mary then worked for 25 years at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville. Mary enjoyed being a Cub Scout Leader, doing volunteer work at Hospice and Wayne HealthCare. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Versailles. She helped with Meals on Wheels, made mats from plastic bags for the homeless. Enjoyed working crossword puzzles, crocheting and in 2020 during Covid made several masks to share with members of the church. Mary was also a member of the Versailles Eagles Auxiliary for over 50 years.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Ippy Mwakabonga officiating. Burial will follow in St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery in Greenville. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to EverHeart Hospice in Greenville.

I retired from BRC this past January after working as a nurse on RW4 for many years. Mary never remembered my name but she knew I grew up living next to Alma Moss & Mary Shuler. We spoke frequently about those ladies & Mary `s work at Rest Haven. I enjoyed her stories so very much. Deepest sympathies to all.
