Mary Strenn

Mary was the smartest woman I have ever know, and she was a wonderful friend. I still miss her all the time.

I met Mary playing tennis at the Manhattan Club. She and Ivo, my late husband, Ray, and I enjoyed many dinners and card games together. In addition to playing tennis together, Mary and I socialized, and sometimes traveled together. Mary was the smartest woman I have ever known. The last time Mary called me, she shared that she was having a health challenge. That was a total shock to me because she always took such good care of herself; exercising, eating properly, etc., etc. I tried...

Those of us who benefited from Mary's interests and time were indeed fortunate. I had the pleasure of working with her as a volunteer for ICMA's graduate education work, involving inspiring students to consider a career in local government and management. She cut back at one point to devote more time to the ALA, and I admit I was jealous to be losing such a great contributor, but knew her efforts were needed elsewhere. Mary was an impressive professional and was a valued Senior Advisor for almost 11 years. She was focused on creating quality professional service vital to all of us. And she was able to define avenues to innovation and help others in their careers of public service . I got to sit next to her at my very first ALA Regional Board meeting. I could feel her joie de vivre before I even had the chance to speak with her. She was intelligent, kind and inspirational. May her memory be for a blessing.
