FLYNN, Matthew MATTHEW JOSEPH FLYNN Matthew Joseph Flynn, 76, of Atlanta Georgia died Friday, February 13, 2009. He was born March 21, 1932 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the son of the late Matthew Joseph and Cecelia Theresa Watermeier Flynn of New Orleans. Matt grew up in New York and graduated from Baldwin High School. He was a 1954 graduate of The University of Maryland, where he was a varsity wrestler and won the Southern Conference Championship in 1952. He was a respected aviator with an impeccable record who served his country proudly, and retired as a Lt. Col. with the United States Air Force Reserve. Matt flew with the 700th TAC at Dobbins AFB. Matt retired reluctantly from Eastern Airlines in 1987 having flown the Boeing 720, 727, L-1011, and as one of the first First Officers on the Boeing 757 Aircraft. At the time of his retirement, he was a DC-9 Captain, based in Atlanta. Matt loved aviation, and enjoyed flying all aircraft, large and small, but especially treasured his experiences flying the C-124 during his active duty assignment in the Vietnam War. Matt flew safely many missions in and out of Vietnam and told great stories about his experiences during those years. Matt is survived by his three sons and their families, Kevin Patrick Flynn of Baltimore, Maryland, his wife Christie and their son Jack, Michael Brendan Flynn of Brooks Georgia, his wife Elizabeth and their daughters Kelli and Kara, and Christopher Matthew Flynn of Tokyo, Japan. He is survived by his two brothers, Warren Flynn of Los Angeles, California, Father Michael Flynn of Farmingdale, New York, nieces and nephews, Warren, Kevin, Kathleen and Eileen. Matt is also survived by former wife Linda Flynn of Dawsonville, Georgia and former wife and mother of Matt's three sons, Gail Flynn of Highlands, North Carolina. Matt will by sorely missed by all of his surviving family and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 21, 2009 at 12:00 PM at C.J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home in Fayetteville, Georgia to honor him and celebrate his life. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00p.m. on Saturday.
