Matt was not only a gifted athlete but a smart and hardworking student during our time in high school. He was genuinely considerate and a caring person. I recall fondly how he unselfishly spend time trying to help me, someone with minimal athletic ability, improve my basketball shooting skills at his driveway hoop during high school. I first met Matt when he enrolled as a student-athlete at UC Santa Barbara in the Fall of 1977.

I had started a job as the school's sports information director that same year.

Matt was an outstanding basketball player during his two seasons at UCSB (1977-78 and 1978-79). He could shoot the basketball from anywhere on the country. In 54 games at UCSB, Matt led the team in scoring (15.4 ppg).

But what I remember most about Matt was his ability to make friends with...

I am so deeply sorry to hear this news. Matt was the epitome of a good human being, and I can't believe he is gone. My condolences to his family and his friends. Our community has suffered a great loss.
