Matt was not only a gifted athlete but a smart and hardworking student during our time in high school. He was genuinely considerate and a caring person. I recall fondly how he unselfishly spend time trying to help me, someone with minimal athletic ability, improve my basketball shooting skills at his driveway hoop during high school. My deepest condolences to his family and friends Tarek Amer

I first met Matt when he enrolled as a student-athlete at UC Santa Barbara in the Fall of 1977.
I had started a job as the school's sports information director that same year.
Matt was an outstanding basketball player during his two seasons at UCSB (1977-78 and 1978-79). He could shoot the basketball from anywhere on the country. In 54 games at UCSB, Matt led the team in scoring (15.4 ppg).
But what I remember most about Matt was his ability to make friends with everybody. He was so well liked by his teammates and the many fans who attended the games at Rob Gym.
May the Good Lord always protect Matt Maderos.

Dear Matt, Terry and I will miss you so much more than you could ever guess. We loved you like a son that you were to us. We were so proud when you called us your Santa Barbara parents.I enjoyed all our golf games. You taught me making putts was easy just like shooting free throws. We watched many a 49er game together and reveled in their success. Bob jr., Susan, and Nancy loved you and will miss your good humor, smile, and friendship just as we will. We love you Matt, and hope to see you again in heaven where you belong good and faithful friend. Love, Bob and Terry Olson
