I have such good memories of Matt and his effort for me as a coach in football. What a good young man and leader he was for our football team. Nothing but positive things to say about his time at Shawnee Mission West high school. He was part of the reason that West was such a spacious school with such as staining administrators, teachers, parents, and students. I was blessed to have been involved with the school for 33 years because of people like Matt.

I was so fortunate to have been involved with SM West from 1972-2005. It was a special place to teach and coach because of parents such as yourselves and students and athletes as Maggie and Matt . When my wife died in Feb of 2008 from Breast Cancer it was very touching for our family the support that we received from the SM West community. Mike Marler was correct when he said SM West is a lifestyle. As a Coach/teacher I never got to see all of Matts humorous sides yet I appreciated his work ethics and care for fellow human being. We can not ease the pain or loss that we feel with Matt no longer with us. I do know that in his 33 years here he had such a positive impact on so many lives that others who live longer will not be able to accomplish. There is always a place at my familys' table for any SM West Viking. Bless you and take care Coach Gary Scott

My deepest sympathy to the Smith family and all of Matt's (Smitty's) friends who love him so much. He was a big guy with an equally big personality and heart. He lived life large and, although his life was cut short, that life is to be celebrated. He touched the lives of so many in such a positive way. Time and unforeseen occurrences befall us all. We can be thankful for the time we shared with him and confident that we will see him again on the Lords Day; oh how very joyful that day will be. Until then we take time to grieve our loss and at the same time celebrate his life.
