I always remember him. He remains the finest human I have met in my long life. SUCH a wonderful person!

Max and I shared a love of music. When he learned that I considered Haydn to be "boring," he was horrified. He then plied me with exquisite selections from Haydn's works, which changed my view of Haydn completely. He followed this up with a CD containing Haydn's symphonies 103 and 104. With his deliciously impish sense of humor, he wrote on the accompanying card, "I finally got this right. Papa Haydn"

Max was very likely the wittiest person we ever met, as well as one of the kindest and most modest. Max loved music deeply and was devoted to both the concerts and the musicians at Marlboro. When Ellen told him that she sometimes found Haydn "boring," he sent her a recording of Haydn´s 102nd symphony with a note saying, ""I finally got it right. Papa Haydn." Other CDs followed. When you told Max a joke, you never feared that he wouldn't get it. Indeed, he would generally top it with some...
