Max was not a close friend, but he was a friend, and a fellow traveller in the fight for rights. He was there and had the time for me when we travelled and could meet up. I admired him greatly; his courage to stand up and be counted, his courage to be himself, and simply his courage to be trans when to be trans was the lowest form of life on earth.
