Melvin Campbell Obituary

Melvin Campbell

Rev. Dr. Melvin Hunter Campbell, 89, of Lynchburg, Virginia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, September 8, 2025.

Born on August 21, 1936, in Madison Heights, he was the beloved son of the late Hiram and Ruby Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 13 siblings and his cherished son, Peter Anthony Campbell.

Pastor Campbell is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Shelby Jones Campbell; one son, Tim Campbell (Brenda); grandchildren, Winter DeJarnette (Greg), Wesley Campbell, Whitney Brandt (Will), and Wynomi Campbell; great-grandchildren, Christopher DeJarnette, Tristan DeJarnette (Storm), Shianh Toms (Titus), and Kelsey DeJarnette; and great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt Taylor, Rylan DeJarnette, Wynona DeJarnette, Caroline Toms, and Scarlett Donald. He also leaves behind his sister, Gaile Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly.

In 1966, Pastor Campbell followed God's call to found Jordan Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as pastor for nearly six decades. Through his unwavering devotion and Christ-like humility, he became a spiritual father to many and a steadfast beacon of light in the Lynchburg community and beyond. His ministry touched countless lives locally and around the world.

Pastor Campbell was deeply respected and profoundly loved. His life was a living testimony to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was known for his constant encouragement to "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths," (Proverbs 3:5-6). These words, a personal favorite, were often found in his sermons, letters, and personal correspondence. Above all, he never ceased to proclaim the simple, life-changing truth: Jesus Saves.

A service celebrating Pastor Campbell's life and legacy will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Jordan Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Dean officiating. Rev. Freddie Williams, Rev. Carlton "Buttons" Dunn, and Rev. Peyton Fitzgerald will assist in the service. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jordan Baptist Church, 1738 Arkansas Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24501.

The Campbell family is being served by Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Condolences may be shared online at www.whittentimberlake.com.

I met Pastor Campbell in the 70s when he did some work for us.
He was such a kind and godly man.
He had a great influence on my father for which I am grateful.
May the Lord comfort his dear wife and family.
