I worked for UP from 1953 to 1988 at which time I took one of their early retirement packages. Mike did as well. Neither one of us was really ready to retire but it was such a deal we could not pass it up.
Mike was my boss at the time I retired. Of all the people I worked for Mike was one I could lay it all on the table. Occasionally we did not agree and when I came out of his office Mary Hagerty would comment, Al you guys must really enjoy each others company. I attended many staff...

To the Ahern Family,

I worked for the "real" UP from 1967 to 1979, first in MP&E then in MIS. While in MIS I took the job of communications department interface, mainly because my dad had been a telegrapher and I liked these types of people. There I met and worked with Al Edelmaier and Mike.

I met big Mike only 1 time 25 years ago. I still remember his intelligence, hospitality and sense of humor. They just don't make guys like him anymore. So sorry to hear he passed, yet so glad you had such a wonderful Dad and Gran'Pa

We are very sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather. He was a very good man and very much respected. Keep his memories close to your heart to help ease the pain. We believe he is in a better place and is back with his best friend and woman of his life. May God Bless you and keep you close to Him.

Bob,

I am sorry for the loss of your father. May eternal rest be granted unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

To family members: Elden S. Ward worked with your dad, Mike Ahern, for many years... he offers his condolences... I remember him coming to dinner in North Platte, Portland, Ore., and in Salt Lake. Prayers to all...
