I worked for UP from 1953 to 1988 at which time I took one of their early retirement packages. Mike did as well. Neither one of us was really ready to retire but it was such a deal we could not pass it up.
Mike was my boss at the time I retired. Of all the people I worked for Mike was one I could lay it all on the table. Occasionally we did not agree and when I came out of his office Mary Hagerty would comment, Al you guys must really enjoy each others company. I attended many staff meetings with Mike and occasionally my wife Joanne tagged along as many of the wives did. Joanne always commented, "What a wonderful wife Mike has". I do not know why but I never called him Mick as many did it was always Ahern and I was Edelmaier by Mike.

To the Ahern Family,
I worked for the "real" UP from 1967 to 1979, first in MP&E then in MIS. While in MIS I took the job of communications department interface, mainly because my dad had been a telegrapher and I liked these types of people. There I met and worked with Al Edelmaier and Mike.
As I got to know Mike liking him was infectious! He was like a father confessor if I had a problem, telling me to "sit down and tell me about it". He gave good advice to me on more than one occasion.
For some reason Edelmaier, Ahern, and I usually called one another by our last names. At one point Mike started calling me "Davie Baby" .. I never figured out why, nor did I take offense. I guess the three of us trusted one another and were comfortable in the work environment to do so.
Turned out I lived about 2 blocks north of him in North Oaks. I used to take my John Deere tractor with snow blower down and clean out the driveway. Never wanted any money, just did it for a good friend. Kate always wanted to ply me with coffee and goodies .. what a PEACH of a woman I must say!
Mike & I once went on a business trip to Miami together, to learn about Racel-Vadic modems. He insisted that we go swimming in the Alantic, we went to K-Mart to buy swim suits, then we changed in the rental car at the beach. I wouldn't go in past my knees, told him there were big things in there that were hungry. While laying on the beach watching Mike in the ocean up to his neck, he started whooping and thrashing his way to shore. When he got to our motel towels he said "Something BIG touched my leg". End of our ocean swimming!
Both Mike and Kate are shinning examples on how to live life .. hard to live up to some days .. and an eternal part of my life. Can't think of either one of them without getting a smile on my face.

To the family,
Sorry to hear of your loss. I have been in Houston, Tx for 55 years, but I remember Mick, Frank Tomsikowsky, and I use to gamble during spanish class. I went to St. John's grade school with Kathleen Sanders for eight years. She was the best looking and smartest girl in our class.(1948) I miss them both, knowing they are not with us any more. Lots of love to ya'll. John (Jack) & Gretta Hall

To the family,
So sad about the loss of your father. He was loved by many and we had great moments with him out at Jeanie Muldoons where I first met him and where we planned to celebrate his birthday. He brought a lot of laughter and love to our lives and his presence will be missed greatly.

To Jeannie, Kathy, Elaine, Bob and family,
We are so sorry for the loss of your dad. He was a great guy who loved to tease you and give you a hard time. He came on tough but was a teddy bear. I have great memories of high school hanging out at the Aherns getting the third degree from Mick. He had to approve our plans, clothing ,etc. We knew when we went to your house that we would have to go through Mick before we could leave the house with Jeannie. He would give us a hard time, make us laugh and then tell us to get out of there. I am so glad I got to know him. As a parent today, I understand everything he put us through in high school. He loved his kids and wanted to keep them safe.
He is with your Mom and at Peace and that can be comforting to all of you during this difficult time.
God Bless all of you. Our prayers are with you.
Love
