Michael Barranco Obituary

Michael Barranco

Jackson

Michael Anthony Barranco, 48, died Tuesday February 22, 2011 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Tunica, MS.

Michael Barranco was first and foremost a man of God. Michael's faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of his character, his marriage, his family and his work. He was a man who lived a life that may have seemed brief but it was by no means "unfishished." He squeezed every moment of life out of every day. He never wasted any of his life. And he lived without regrets.

In Jackson and beyond, Michael will be remembered for many and varied passions and involvements. He was a 1980 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School ? where many of his best loved memories were on the football field. He was a man committed to Scouting from his earliest days as a boy with his father, John S. Barranco of Jackson. Michael achieved his Eagle Scout Award and was a member of the Order of the Arrow and was currently serving on the advisory Board of the Andrew Jackson Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In recent years Michael continued his love for scouting by founding the Boy Scout troup at Redeemer Church in North Jackson, where he and his family also worshipped.

Michael was perhaps most remembered in Mississippi for his skills as an artist which manifested themselves in his work as an architect and as a musician. Michael graduated from Mississippi State University in 1985 with a BA in Architecture and has been one of the most influential architects in the state of Mississippi in recent years. He was the past president of the Mississippi chapter of the American Institute of Architects and was currently serving as the president of the Mississippi State Board of Architecture. Michael was the formulator of the idea of a Mississippi Charrette which, with the help of many colleagures, resulted in the Mississippi Renewal Forum which led to a remarkable collaborative endeavor in response to the devastating hurricane Katrina of 2005.

Additionally, Michael loved music. In fact he and his wife of 24 years, Jene Ray Barranco met at Poet's in 1986 where Michael performed regularly with the Andy Hardwick Trio. Though he is probably more well known for his work with the Bluz Boys and more recently with the Barranco Brothers.

Michael, a native of Jackson, is survived by his wife, Jene Ray Barranco and their three children, Mia (18), Julia (14) and Michael Anthony, Jr. (12). He is also survived by his parents, John S. Barranco, Sr. and Camille Griffith Barranco of Jackson; brother, John S. Barranco, Jr. of Nashville; sister, Pam Barranco Jew and Sam Jew of Jackson; brother, Vincent Barranco of Nashville; and sister, Lesa Barranco Nuzzo and Al Nuzzo of Jackson. He is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5-8 pm, Friday February 25, 2011 and 1pm Saturday at the Belhaven Center for the Arts on Riverside Drive in Jackson. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday February 26 2011, at the Belhaven Center for the Arts. A private burial service will follow for family. Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland is assisting with the arrangements.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, will be used to set up the Michael Barranco Boy Scout Fund and Redeemer Church where Michael established a troop as a ministry outreach to the underprivileged boys in the local community. To donate contact Scott Marshall at 601-714-1668 [email protected].

I posted this date on my calendar lat year, and have been watching it creep up for the past few weeks.

365 short days ago you left us all behind. I just don't understand why things happen the way they do.

If this past year is any indication of time, I hope to see you soon.

Jene', i have no idea how in the world I didn't read or hear about Michael's accident until today. While thumbing through a publication called "Find it in Fondren," I saw that it was dedicated to Michael's memory. I can't believe it. My heart still feels like it's in my stomach as I type this note that I can barely see for the tears. I cannot fathom the depth of your grief. You and Michael have blessed my soul and my life more than you know, and I've never forgotten the love, as the two of you were among my
earliest examples. Thank you. Please know that you will be so lifted up in prayer. I love you and i love Mia. (I don't believe I've met Julia or Michael Anthony jr, but I love them too.) I hope this finds you well.

I just found out about Michael and wanted to tell all of the family how sad I am to hear about your loss. About ten or eleven years ago I ran into Michael when my daughter was at Millsaps. I introduced myself and told him that I knew him when he was about 5 years old and knew that he would not remember me...he said, " I do remember you Vicki, and it's so good to see you." I remember now that precious little boy and the amazing man that he became. I love you all and pray for God's peaceful hand to be upon you.

Over the years I have known most all of the Barrancos. Vince and I were in school together and I knew Lisa and Pam from St. Richard's when my kids were there. Camille has been a dear friend to my sister Kate. I knew Jene and Craig from the Courthouse many years ago, and I went to Michael and Jene's beautiful wedding. My heart is broken, and all of you have been in my thoughts for 2 weeks now. I hope that the outpouring of love from so, so many will be a source of strength to all of you. May God's grace and love console and comfort you.

March 7, 2011

My deepest sympathy to all of the Barrancos and Jene and her family. The sorrow runs deep for the loss of Michael: a son, brother, husband, father and friend to all. Everything you read about him is true- a truly awesome guy on all levels. For the thousands that were able to pay their respect to his family, there are thousands more that hold you in their thoughts and prayers for your loss. Elisha Hawkins (Madison, MS)

I loved Michael Barranco...I still do. I last saw Michael sometime in the 80s. What a guy! When I think about him, I'm reminded of the definition of true character: HOW YOU TREAT SOMEONE WHO CAN DO ABSOULUTELY NOTHING FOR YOU.

Michael loved life because he loved people. I enjoyed accompanying him on guitar while he played "Johnny's Garden"...one of our favorites back then.

My deepest sympathy and prayers are extended to you, his family. It's with much compassion for you and respect for Michael that I encourage each of you to HOLD ON. Phillipians 4:13.

Camille, Pam and Families, I was saddened to learn of the loss of your son and brother Michael. I heard him sing many times over the years before I left the Jackson area. I have very fond memories of the Barranco family growing up in Jackson. Camille is/was my inspiration at many times in my life. May God hold you all in the palm of his hand during this rough time.

March 2, 2011

Michael was an inspiration in life, and in music. I had the privilege of singing with him on many occasions and his talent was God-given. I have been gone from MS for a while now, and when I heard the news today, my family and I were devastated. We are praying for his loving wife, children, family, and the parents who had the honor of raising such a wonderful Christian man. May God Bless you all. Cindy, Bob and the Pickett Family

Camille, as I search for the words to say I keep coming up empty. As I read others comments about Michael one cannot help but notice the scope of his influence both here and abroad. He lived his life to the fullest in the short time God let him stay with us. I wish that I had known him but if he was anything like you, he had to be a great Christain, a loving man and a joy to be around. We will see Michael again.

To the Barranco family: It was such a privilege to have known Michael. He was such a treasure and touched all our lives. God's grace is sufficient to hold you up. His love and attention is constantly upon you.

February 28, 2011

I met Michael, known as 'B' to us, when he came to England on a student exchange in 1989. He came over with many friends including my husband, Paul McWilliams, of 22 years and they shared a flat while here in the UK so I got to know B very well. B fit right in at our school of architecture and his stay culimnated in a musical performance at the school that my friends and I still remark on to this day. I cannot think of B without smiling, even now after such a tragedy-he brought humour, light and life to all who knew him and he has a very special place in our hearts. With love to his family, Lucy Pedler and family. Bristol, UK.

Jene,
I have never known a man who exemplified the love of God more than Michael. No matter how busy he was, he always took time to shake a hand or give a hug and let people know they were important to him. I was the recipient of his graciousness on numerous occasions. Although we have not seen you and Michael much in the last few years, I was reminded of this gift in Michael a couple of weeks ago at our brief meeting at the basketball event for our kids and grandkids. We will miss Michael greatly but rest in the fact that the great heritage he leaves will continue to live on in his family and in the lives of the many he touched. We love you...Rick and Robin Eaton

Johnny, Pam and family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I only met Michael twice , once at a family meatball dinner, he was around 8 years old and then I got to see him play and sing and shake his hand on Dec. 5th 2009.He never knew who I was but a good friend of mine went to the same church with him and his family and she would always tell me what a good man he was and by reading all these messages I know it was true.
What a beautiful life and family, what a gift everyone in Heaven has received and will be waiting for us all to meet again. The Barranco family are always in my prayers. God Bless and keep you all.

Michael changed my life at an early formative time when I first started playing music and then later just by understanding what a great man he lived to be. I looked up to him and felt so fortunate to have seen him again a few weeks ago at Club 119. I feel so blessed to have been able to perform together again. A great man. A brother. Will miss him. There will never be another Michael Barranco. Prayers to Jene and the family . I think he is crafting a new and beautiful design for the pearly gates right now :)

We knew "Michael B" from Holy Family and St. Joe. I remember a picture he did in art class of a garden. It was amazing. He was a gentle soul and always very funny. We were blesed to have known him. Our sincerest regrets for everyone who loved him. Peace to you. Tammy Dean and Vance Jensen.

February 26, 2011

Dearest Barranco families,
The Capriotti's go a long way back with your family. Camille was Mother's dear friend and we all went to school together at Holy Family. What a testimony and joy you all have been in our lives. So many memories... and recently so blessed to meet Michael's wife and children and to share meals and bible study in their home.

We are devastated and really in shock. There aren't enough words to describe what an amazing man Michael was. Everyone was drawn to him when he walked into a room. Although he was so talented in so many ways he was always so gracious and humble and considered others more important than himself.

We know He is now in the mansion Jesus designed just for him & I wouldn't want to take that away from Him, but we will all sorely miss him and long to spend eternity with him. May God give you all a peace that surpasses all understanding. Our heartfelt love goes out to you all.

Gee, terrible news. I met Michael many years ago in a summer school class at Hinds (physics) then listened to him play in Jackson many many nights. He was always a gentleman, you could tell he respected others and had the 'caring' trait that made him special. It's been twenty plus years since seeing him , he made an impression on my life, deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Micahel and I go back to The Holy Family Days, he was a few years older when we played elementary football. I used to remember going to the St Paddy Day parades and after the parade watching the Bluz Boys perform. It was always great hearing Michael sing. I lost touch with Michael over the years and then we reconnected when our kids swam together for the Sunkist Swim team...they had good times together. I had not seen Michael in a few years since I had moved to Indiana. Michael you were a great person and you have a really great family. Jene, Mia, Julia and Michael you will always be in my thoughts and prayers....I know you are going to miss him very much.....I know we are going to miss him too.

Jene', My heart breaks for you and your precious children. I can't even begin to imagine how you are feeling right now. We sometimes take for granted that we will always be here. That's why it is so important to enjoy life every day and show your love to every one just like it was your last day on earth. I know Michael did just that. He was such a blessing. I remember when Michael would sing at WOL the presence of God was so strong. I am truly honored that I got to play the piano for him. He was so easy to follow. I pray that God will strengthen you and give you peace.

Mike and I became friends from the days of Camp Kickapoo / Boys Scouts. His graciousness to me was evident as he made me feel a part of the staff as a councilor in training / tentmate, another year as a fellow staff member / lifeguard. I watched Mike teach hundreds of young men not only waterfront skills, but also patience, confidence and the truest essence of Scouting.

As he and I have visited through the years, we have laughed at our old stories from those years and talked about what a impact it had on our lives. I continued to enjoy admire Mike through the years as a "Blues Boy" and as a contractor myself, an incredibly talented architect. I know Mike made a huge impression on many men throughout his lifetime. I am proudly, one of those "many".

Wonderful man and above all, a servant of our God.... Heaven has a wonderful new Angel, his name is Michael Barranco.

Deepest sympathies to Jean and all the Barranco family

I tried to attend the visitation Friday night an hour and a half before it was supposed to be over, and the line was so long that the ushers told me that I probably wouldn't get in. What a testimony to how many people know and love Michael and his family. Michael was so full of life and upbeat about everything. He was was generous with his time and his god-given talents. And I never heard him say an unkind word about anything or anyone. The enormous turnout at his visitation shows that the world values those qualities, even though the modern culture seems to glamorize less worthy things. Michael was a wonderful person and I will miss him greatly.

Michael's death has touched so many. It makes you realize that life is so precious and we should stop and enjoy every second like Michael did. I have not seen him for many years, but the news of his death touched my soul. He meant so much to our family. He brought so many laughs and happy times to our get togethers. We would never miss any of his performances with Andy Hardwick or the Blues Boyz. He personally learned and sang our first song at our wedding. That meant the world to us. There will NEVER be another Michael Barranco. God must have needed him to take him so soon. My thoughts are with you Jene and your family.

I grew up with the Barranco family in the Hanging Moss Road area. I will cherish the memories of Michael from Holy Family (THE WIDCATS-DETERMINATION), Hanging Moss Swim Club, Kick-The-Can, Front yard football, Red Rover, rock-filled socks and frogs to POETS. Then I went to college and when I came home one weekend, I will always remember seeing an incredibly handsome, strong, robust young man with the smile we will always remember. Michael always called me The Victim, after a Robert Cray song. Man, if you ever were fortunate enough to hear Michael sing Georgia, you know what special talent Michael possessed and still does. Love you "M. B." and my thoughts and prayers are with Jene, your children and all of your family. Michael, the next time I see you, I hope you I are on the same side for a game of kick-the-can for "good ole times" sake. GO WILDCATS. Jimmy Mallette

I was heartbroken to hear of Michael's accident and passing. I've known Michael since he was just a little guy. Vincey and I were the best of friends when Michael was probably 6-7 yrs old. We lived a few houses apart. He was such a happy kid with a HUGE smile - I saw him last summer and it'd been at least 40+ yrs since I'd last seen him - he still had that big smile and I could tell he had grown up into an awesome adult. I would give anything to take away some of the pain that the Barranco family has, but I do know that their faith and prayer will get them through this sad time. We'll have you in our thoughts and prayers.

Architecture is a tough business...always under the deadline gun; getting to roll during an up economy; having to creatively survive when the economy falters. It can get frustrating, and there's a fairly significant drop-out rate.

I mention all this because Michael rolled and survived all of the above with/because of his cheer, and optimism, and steadfast, absolute belief in the good that can result from responsible...and joyous...design. The works Michael has left us, and the visions he conjured, will continue to touch and enrich our lives far, far from now.

Bon Voyage, friend.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Michael since high school at St Joe. One of my memories was watching him play the piano and singing the blues during lunch in the gym. People gathered around him every day to see him play. We all knew that he would be successful in anything that he put his mind to and he did not let anyone down. I never saw him without a smile on his face. He is a person that we all looked up to and wanted to be like. My heart goes out to his entire family. He was a good Christian, Husband, Father, and friend to many people. All will miss him. Heaven got a first round draft pick this week. His legacy will live for many years to come.

Michael always held a special place in my heart and mind. He was always the younger kid hanging around ... but we didn't mind. He was fun back then and full of life and that's the way he grew up. Nice to have around. When I would see him singing at Poet's he would always sing my favorite song for me. God gave him that beautiful voice. Then he decided to get into architecture, but couldn't really afford a drafting table at that time. I said, " I'll sell you my grandfather's drafting table. It's an antique". He was thrilled and said he knew he couldn't afford it. I said yes you can . The price is $1.00. He argued with me for the longest time about that dollar,"It's not enough, It's not enough.". I said you just make good use of it and I will be happy. What are friends for. I got to here his beautiful voice sing my song and my grandfather's table helped get him started for a little while. I think Micheal brought life back into that old table just like he did to everybody's lives he's touched. Look at what he has accomplished in his own life. Good wife, good children, good all around family, good friends, good christian, good reputation, on and on and on. That's the mark of a good man. One we were all very blessed to know in so many different ways. Now maybe God wants the gates to heaven to be remodeled and he needed Michael to do it. God only gets the best.
Lesa and Al and all the rest of the family, my heart and my prayers are with you all.
Michael, sure did enjoy our visit hear on earth. I'll see ya later in heaven. Save me that song.

Love to all,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Barranco family. Michael is looking down on us from his new home now. He was a LEADER and truly a blessing to know. I have great memories of knocking heads with him on the football field at St. Joseph. These are some very good memories indeed - he was a tough player and NEVER QUIT. Remember the painting he made on the locker room wall from the old poster. Michael and I shared great times in the Scouts rowing at Camp Kickapoo and in the Order of the Arrow where he was a fantastic Indian Costume designer and dancer. He could shake the whole camp with his thundering bells and gentle spinning whistle. Cheerful service was his middle name. Later in life I would visit him on occasion in the architecture building at MSU where he was always burning the midnight oil building models for his classes. To the family - you are in the prayers of my family and I too feel the pain of this loss.
Michael was above all a GOOD FRIEND.

From the time we moved to Mississippi and met the Barranco family , Michael was warm and welcoming to us. You could see he was a great man by looking at his family. We have moved away but our hearts and prayers are with the family.
To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Michael was one of the sweetest souls I have ever met. His sunny disposition and sense of humor was infectuous. I was fortunate to perform and record music with him, and also with his brothers Johnny and Vince. I will miss him terribly.

I have never met a kinder, more loving person than Michael. His gentle spirit could see the true heart of others and the silver lining of every cloud. Michael had a way of making everyone he met feel special. If we could all be half the man he was, the world would be as close to perfect as this side of Heaven could possibly be. Rest in peace, my friend. You will be missed by many, but your spirit will remain in the hearts of all of us. To the Rays and Barrancos, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I last saw Michael at the charette in Biloxi after Katrina. He was so full of energy and excitement about the possibilities for the Coast's recovery, just like he was always full of energy and excitement about his music and life in general. My deepest sympathy go to all of the Barranco family. Have faith and strength and hold close the fond memories of a good man.

Michael was our classmate in the Leadership Jackson class of 1996-97. He was a true leader whose integrity, loving kindness, generosity, and love for all of humanity was always evident in his demeanor, relationships, and especially in his devotion to his family and his faith in God. We grieve with his family and for all who knew and loved him, and we are grateful for his time among us.

Jene and Family,
Our heart grieves with yours as we pray for God’s grace and love to strengthen you through your loss. What can be said about Michael that you do not already know in the deepest of ways. He is and always will be a great man and because we know that you will be joined with him again someday we also know that your sorrow will turn to joy. Until that day, you will be surrounded with love and support from all those who love you.

Michael's creative fire was always evident, from his music to his architecture. This creative passion showed in his enthusiastic and always optimistic personality, but the things he liked to talk about most were his faith and family. I have no doubt that his big smile and huge heart are already providing the same welcoming presence in heaven that he instilled in his projects on earth.
Having worked with Michael as the engineer for several of his projects, I know that one thing the design team likes to do is to design with a flexibility to allow for unexpected conditions. This is often referred to as preparing for situations where "the devil is in the details" by providing "an angel in the architecture". This phrase has special meaning today.

Michael was certainly one of the good guys. A true pleasure to work with and his love for God and his family shone brightly. This community will miss his creativity and his passion for life. My prayers are with his entire family.

My earliest memory of Michael was when we picked up Vince on the way to school, and there was Michael, sitting in the driveway in his diapers, wailing away with a pair of drumsticks and a thousand-watt grin. It still shines over 45 years later, and will never dim. Rest in Peace, brother. -Jack Mallette, Jackson, MS.

Looking through the pictures brought back memories of Michael in high school. He was always so nice and such a talented artist. He stayed that way throughout his life and it's such a loss for the community. My prayers are with his family. My God comfort you and bless you. – Beth (Kreuz) Messina, class of '80
