Michael Grobstein Obituary

December 24, 1941 - March 8, 2017 Michael Jay Grobstein of Encino, California, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, surrounded by his loving family at his home. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barrie, his children, Marla (Keenen) Milner and Marc Harris and two grandchildren, Miranda and Avery. Michael met Barrie on a blind date in 1960, and they were married in August, 1963. Four years later, Michael and Barrie welcomed daughter Marla, and in 1971, Marc Harris was born. The family lived in Woodland Hills until they moved to Encino in 1984. They are lifelong members of Temple Valley Beth Shalom. Michael graduated from CSUN with a degree in Accounting, and soon after passed the CPA exam. In 1967, he founded a CPA firm in Sherman Oaks which became the largest accounting firm in the San Fernando Valley, ultimately becoming Grobstein Horwath LLP. Michael became widely respected for his acumen in advising businesses on financial and strategic issues. In his position as Managing Partner, Michael loved to help young professionals get started in accounting and other fields. Michael was concerned with far more than business matters. He was involved in many philanthropic causes, including The Jewish Home for the Aging, Junior Blind of America, The Grossman Burn Foundation, The City of Hope, California State University, Northridge and the Sheriff's Youth Foundation. Michael enjoyed reading, deep sea fishing, SCUBA diving, jazz, driving his 1971 Italia, bike riding and cross-country skiing. In his later years, Michael became enthralled by landscaping and worked whenever he could in his yard. But above all, his family was Mike's first love and spending time with them, especially for Sunday dinners, was his greatest joy. Services will be held at Eden Memorial Park, Mission Hills, CA on Sunday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations to Junior Blind, 5300 Angeles Vista Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90043, www.juniorblind.org.

Reading what Klick and others wrote about Michael brought tears to my eyes. I only knew him as Marla and Marcs dad and Barries husband. He was always very kind and was such a good dad He and Barrie always made me feel welcome and like i was one of the family. My family and i moved away to Camarillo when was young and i lost contact with them. I wish i could have know them into adulthood
He was clearly a wonderful man who was loved dearly by many
My thoughts go out to Barrie, Marla, Marc and the family

I was friends with Marla when we were in elementary school. She her brother and her parents were like a second family to me. They were loving they were kind and I will always feel blessed by knowing them. I have told countless people in my life for the last 40+ years how about how wonderful they were and good friends to me

Mike Grobstein singlehandedly made me a success in my career. Upon leaving early one day he looked at me and just shook his head. I started to get in early and leave almost last and two months later the partners started to call me "Mr. Leaf", as in turning over a new leaf. That year, Bob "Mr. Leaf" Klick was made employee of the year, an award that was called "The Groby" I still have it.

Guys like "El Grobo" as we sometimes called him can't die - I was stunned by the news - he was larger than life. God bless the Grobstein family.

Mike singlehandedly made me a success in my career without saying a word. I left early one day and he said, "half day Klick?" I said "I always leave at this time. He just shook his head.

In two months the partners started calling me "Mr. Leaf" as in turning over a new leaf. I got the annual employee of the year award which was called "The Groby".

Mike Grobstein was a great man - my comments to alumni of the firm after learning of his passing - "Mike Grobstein CAN'T die - impossible"

Thanks Mike.......

Mike Grobstein was the biggest business influence and mentor in my life. He took a chance on me, took me under his wing and showed me how to grow my own wings. I have carried my gratitude and his influence in my life always, and can only hope and pray that he knows what he meant to me. My sincerest condolences to Barrie, Marla, Marc and his entire family.

Although we became friends later in his life, the last 10 years getting to know Barrie and Mike and their great big hearts has been such a joy. Every week I remember something Mike said to us that was so funny and so true. He had wisdom and humor, generosity and humility. A great man lives on in the hearts of all he has touched. Thanks for being so uniquely Mike Grobstein.

Michael Grobstein was my Mentor. He tutored me in the world of finances and the roads of life. He often was like a Father to me and I loved him very, very much. My heart is out to Barrie and the Children (adults now). Michael often included me as part of his family, let me drive his Italia and whisked me off to fancy places. I shall never, ever forget him and the influence he has made on my life. Sail On My Friend!
