Mike was our big brother; when we were kids hiking at the ranch, he protected us with his bow and quiver of arrows, carrying a 6 ft. rattler taller than he was at age 13. When he was a teenager, he was a life guard, an abalone driver, and a talented sculptor of sand, creating beautiful sea animal sculptures at Kellogg’s Beach in San Diego. When he graduated from high school and joined the Air Force, I felt it was unfair that I was robbed of my big brother when I was only 11.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Jeffers family at this time. I met Mike when I started my school counselor internship at Hephzibah Middle, and then I got to know him during the next 6 years while I was counselor there. He was always friendly, nice, and eager to discuss the current educational "hot topics." He was always well-informed of the latest in educational research.
