Mike was our big brother; when we were kids hiking at the ranch, he protected us with his bow and quiver of arrows, carrying a 6 ft. rattler taller than he was at age 13. When he was a teenager, he was a life guard, an abalone driver, and a talented sculptor of sand, creating beautiful sea animal sculptures at Kellogg’s Beach in San Diego. When he graduated from high school and joined the Air Force, I felt it was unfair that I was robbed of my big brother when I was only 11.
When he returned in my high school years, he lent me his car and paid for the gas, took me and my friends to countless movies and chaperoned my biology classes’ field trip to the Grand Canyon earning the moniker “Klondike Mike” from my friends and scared everyone when he blew his eyebrows and eyelashes off at Oak Creek Canyon with an exploding white gas stove.
When my beloved puppy George, that Danny had given me was killed, Mikie found me an identical ball of fur, knocked on the door of the house, and when I opened it he withdrew from behind his back with the exclamation, “Guess what I found!” a little white puppy with a blue bow in his hair—it was George.
We went to church together, and played hooky from school and work together to escape to the Cuyamaca Mountains. We went to San Diego State together.
I have lost you again my Mikie, my big brother, I will see you in heaven.
Your sister,
Mary Anna

My thoughts and prayers are with the Jeffers family at this time. I met Mike when I started my school counselor internship at Hephzibah Middle, and then I got to know him during the next 6 years while I was counselor there. He was always friendly, nice, and eager to discuss the current educational "hot topics." He was always well-informed of the latest in educational research. From the first time I met him, I considered him not only a colleague, but a friend. I never met Mindy or the boys and his daughter, but I feel like I know them because he would always talk fondly of all of his loved ones. I could tell he really loved you Mindy, he told me how you both met, how God brought you together and how he was blessed to have met you. He also shared with me how much he loved you during your illness and treatments, and how he prayed you would be ok - prayers work! Just know that I am a better person for having known him, and I know how much you all are going to miss him. Love, Patrick Jones

Mindy,
I am so glad Mikie could be home with you by his side in his final moments. You have been a loving companion to my brother and he depended on that companionship for his emotional strength through all the years he shared with you. During his last weeks of life I witnessed how much his just holding your hand comforted his struggle. Thank you for calling so promptly so that I could come spend time with him, give him a hug, stroke his hair and say good by to my childhood best friend and protector.
Love,
Pattie
