Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg Obituary

Michael Joseph Marrone (Joe)
Of Leesburg, VA, passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at the age of 84. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, the late Joseph and Rose Marrone. He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 60 years, Patricia Carroll; his children Terri (Mike) Thomas of Leesburg, VA, Michael (Jessica) Marrone of Oakton, VA, Julie (Tom) Wilson of Leesburg, VA and Tina (Glenn) Marchione of Amissville, VA; his brother, Steven (Connie) Marrone; and his grandchildren Joseph and Thomas Marrone, Ryan and Erica Wilson, and Amanda and Brianne Marchione.

Joe and Pat raised their family, first residing in Oxon Hill, MD and later in Severna Park, MD. They eventually retired to Leesburg, VA to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Joe left his hometown of Lewistown, PA to attend the University of Notre Dame, fulfilling one his father’s dreams for him. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Notre Dame, he completed a master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh and finished his education with a PhD in Physics from Catholic University.

Dr. Michael J. Marrone enjoyed a rewarding and successful career as a research physicist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. He is named on 7 patents granted in the 1980s and 1990s in the field of fiber optics before retiring in 1996.

Joe was an active volunteer throughout most of his adult life. He served as a much-loved coach for youth sports (baseball, basketball and soccer) and led the Oxon Hill Boys and Girls Club. He worked as a soccer referee for many years, including several years at the college level. During his retirement years in Leesburg, he continued to be of service to his new community. He was involved at his local polling station at every election and was an active volunteer at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church.

In his spare time, he enjoyed working in his garden and was an avid sports fan. Favorite teams were Notre Dame football (of course) and the Washington Nationals and Capitals teams. “Joepa”, as he was known by his grandchildren, was an enthusiastic supporter and ever-present fan at their various sports and other activities.

Not sure what to say?

I was saddened to learn that Michael has passed away. I just found out yesterday. I have very good and heartfelt memories of Michael at the Naval Research Laboratory. I was fortunate enough to share an office with him shortly after I joined the laboratory in 1983. As a new and young member of the Optical Sciences Division, I found that Michael was very understanding and a great person to discuss any issues that I confronted there at the time. His memory should be a blessing to his...

I am terribly sorry to hear this. Me Marrone was a family friend. My deepest sympathy to Pat, Terri, Michael, Julie, Tina, and all the family.

Mr. Marrone was one of the smartest, kindest men I ever met in my life. He coached our baseball team when Mike and I were 9 years old. We were the smallest on the team.Mr. Marrone was meticulous, he kept stats better than MLB teams. I always questioned why he gave kids hits for walks. I would always tell him a Walk is not a hit, he would just smile at me. I ended up playing baseball in college and now I coach. I understand, Mr. Marrone, why you helped those kids with the stats. I try to...

RIP Joe.

I am sending so much love to the Marrone family. Joe and Pat and their children are such sweet parts of my Oxon Hill childhood and I am sad that they are now feeling this loss.
The entire Ekelund family send their love.
