Michele LaSORSA Obituary

LaSORSA, MICHELE "MIKE" ANGELO - age 77, died peacefully at his home in South Knoxville with family on Christmas Eve night. Mike was born on December 1st, 1934 in Hudson Falls, NY, moved to Providence, RI and then served with the United States Army in the AirBorn. Following the Korean War, "Poppa" headed to Knoxville, TN as a University of Tennessee walk-on to the 1956 undefeated football team. After a successful college football career culminating his senior year as captain and graduation in 1961, Mike chose to keep Knoxville as his home, becoming a celebrated high-school teacher and coach. Mike dedicated his life to mentoring young men through sports. Mike helped to found The Knoxville Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was an active member of the UT Lettermen's "T" Club, and a Eucharistic minister at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mike is preceded in death by his father, Salvino LaSorsa, and older brother, Vincent LaSorsa. Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Rose Marie; their sons, Scott and Brent; daughters-in-law, Cathy and Karen; eight grandchildren, Olivia, Sophia, Mason, Cambria, Julia, Karley, Hannah and Hayden; mother, Laura Thornock; brother, Tony DiChiro; nephew, Vinny LaSorsa; niece, Carmele Goins; several extended family members including Richard and Mary Joan Baggot and many dear friends. Mike will be memorialized during a mass on Wednesday, December 28th @ 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that gifts be made to either The American Cancer Society or UT Medical Center Hospice Services. Mike was deeply loved and will be terribly missed, yet there is celebration in his death for his extraordinary life, huge heart and now his homecoming to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Rose - I thought You and the family would get some comfort on reading this poem Sylvia and My son Jeff wrote when he was a Teen.. Don and Sylvia Clark.

In Faith

There are lots of things I have
In this world below.
Things that I can measure
I can see, I can know.

Golden treasures, a pet's warm fur
Forests tall and green.
But the things that matter most to me
Are things that are unseen.

Anything that truly lasts
Is neither bought nor sold.
These things you cannot measure
Cannot touch, cannot hold.

What are these things, how are they real
How can they really be?
These greatest gifts are all the things
That faith has shown to me.

It is faith that keeps me walking
Thru the dark when it is night.
Faith that lets me know that if I wait
There will be light.

Faith that caused me to accept
The gift that Christ's blood bought.
Faith that changed my life and gave
Salvation that I sought.

And faith that gives me courage
When my life is filled with pain.
Faith that when I live with Christ
To die with him is gain.

Faith that lets me know my Father
Looks on me with love.
Faith that tells me my true home
Is with Him up above.

My life on earth is brief
As are the mountains I have trod;
But my faith takes me home to spend
Eternity with God.

Your Son
Jeff

Scott i remember when i went to south young (freshman year) i had your dad as my homeroom teacher and i was like excuse me sir but i think i know your son and he was like how do you know him and i told him that i basically grew up with you at mt. olive and doyle he smiled and said yep you do know my son. he was so proud of you he would make comments in class regularly like when you all would play football against each other you would go over game plays you wouldnt let him know which ones cause you were on opposite sides for th doyle / south young game and he said that showed dedication that you would study that way for your studies as well as the game. i enjoyed the first part of the day cause he had a smile and a great sense of humor every morning

Rose, Scott and Brent,

May God bless each of you and grant you peace. My prayers and sympathies are with you. I just this day was made aware of Mike's passing. I recall fondly Mike's arrival at UT and at East Stadium Hall. He wasn't the biggest of us linemen. but he had the heart of a giant. We sort of lost touch after my graduation and entry in the U.S Navy, until my retirement and return to South Knoxville. You will be sorely missed my friend. I wish you fair winds and following seas.

God saw you getting tired

and a cure was not to be

so he put his arms around you

and whispered,

"Come to Me"

With tearful eyes we watched you

and saw you pass away

and although we love you dearly

we could not make you stay.

A Golden heart stopped beating

hard working hands at rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us

He only takes the best
