Miriam Ford Obituary

Miriam DuBose Ford LEXINGTON - Miriam DuBose Ford went to heaven on February 6, 2016 from complications of a stroke she suffered almost a year ago. The family will receive friends on February 10, 2016 from 9:30am to 11:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, 1205 Old Cherokee Rd, Lexington, SC 29072. Graveside service will be held at 2:00pm at Sumter Cemetery, 700 West Oakland Ave., Sumter SC, 29150. Born in Sumter SC, she was the youngest of 6 children born to the late Robert Fleetwood DuBose Sr. & Rena Rich DuBose. Miriam, Red, Ford, Mom or Mimi, all names she was known by to her family and friends, but mostly she was known for the love that she shared with anyone she came in touch with. She shared, she gave and she loved every moment on this earth. She was a shining light everywhere she went. She began her well known fashion career at the Capital Department Store in Sumter SC. After her sons, Wilburn "Vic" Victor and Kenneth "Ken" Brooks were born she moved from Sumter to Columbia bringing with them, dear friend and 2nd mother to the boys, Annie McCall. From there she made her mark on fashion in the midlands area. Working as head buyer for Berry's on Main for many years and traveling all over the United States enjoying life and making new friends everywhere! She knew everything there was to know about New York City from fashion to diamonds and the best places to stay and of course the best places to drink or dine. She has the match book from EVERY single place to prove it! If she doesn't have the match book, she has the cocktail stirrer. After many years with Berry's on Main, Miriam partnered and managed Pat's Place at the then brand new Columbia Mall. She put together numerous fashion shows for every cause imaginable. She had the best models, the best clothes but more importantly she had fun. Anyone honored to be around her had plenty of fun! Next she managed a specialty petite store called Petite Collections, back when no one really specialized in petite fashions. Making her mark once again, she decided it was time for her to open her own place and Miriam's Petites & Missy Fashions was born. Lexington South Carolina would never be the same place again. She rented the store at 142 Ellis Ave and got busy. She didn't just sell clothing, she was so much more than a store owner, she was a pillar in the Lexington Community. In her own words, from an article written for the Lexington Leaders (by Jackie Perrone).

I remember Aunt Miriam making Seafood/meat Paella for friends and family decades ago. It was as a gourmet meal, feeding our souls and bodies. The hospitality, friendliness and fun were quintessential.

Ken, Vic & Sharonkay, I am so sorry for your loss. Aunt Miriam's life touched so many and I know she will be missed by all. I have so many fond memories of spending time with her at the lake house. Every time I see a Bloody Mary, I remember how there was never one far from her grasp; oh how she loved her Bloody Mary's. Her business and fashion sense is what inspired me to go into merchandising. I loved the energy and enthusiasm that she put into every aspect of it. Aunt Miriam never knew a stranger and was a delight to all, I know I will miss her and so will anyone that ever had a pleasure to meet her!

That infectious laugh, the smile, that famous raspy voice - that was our beloved Miriam. A woman who will live within the hearts of every life she touched.

My mother, Lynn Dubose, and I shared our Aunt Miriam's undying love for fashion. Growing up I would hear people tell my mother, "You're so much your aunt." Miriam was truly such a part of who both my mother and myself are. She influenced us as we're both following in her fashion industry footsteps. At 15, my mother was working for Miriam - watching her handpick garments for the new season along with learning how to greet clients with graciousness. She loved to let everyone know that was her niece. My mother was as equally proud to announce Miriam as her aunt.

My grandmother, Joann Dubose, will deeply miss her sister-in-law. I remember her taking me into Miriam's boutique when I was young girl.

I love my last memory of my Aunt Miriam - us chatting about her old times galavanting around NYC. She was thrilled that I was living the big Manhattan dream that she had experienced. I loved talking to that woman, her personality will remain one of the best I've ever come across.

The love my grandmother, my mother and I have for Miriam will never die or be forgotten. She was bigger than life.

I married one of Miriam's nieces back in 1971 in Orlando, Florida. My family and I went up to visit Miriam in the early 1980's as Miriam was one of my wife's favorite aunts. In the short periods of time that I was able to spend at Aunt Miriam's, I fell in love with her as well. Aunt Miriam gave me permission to address her as Aunt Miriam as in no time we felt like we know each other well. In 2004, my wife suddenly passed away. At that time I prayed that I could find Aunt Miriam's telephone number. She came down to Florida immediately to be with me and my children. I am so glad that I got to spend some time with her while she was on this earth. My prayers go out to her family who she leaves behind.

I will miss Vic, Ken and SK, who were like family to me. We all loved y'all and Mimi. I remember just sitting with her and holding her hand Friday. She touched all of our lives at Lexington Extended Care.

Miriam has given me a "Life Time" of memories...she showed me the ropes when I moved from Charleston to Columbia to be her Assistant Buyer at Berry's on Main. She never met a stranger and that laughter of hers was contagious...and lives on.

To The Ford Family: I have just learned today of Miriam's passing and am so saddened. I worked for Miriam in her store for several years. You could not have known a better and more caring person. She was always full of laughter and never knew a stranger. She was a true role model in so many ways. I would have loved to have been at her services today, but my prayers and heart felt sympathy are with you. I have so many wonderful and fond memories of Miriam. The world was a better place with her and she will be missed. I've been blessed to have known her.

Vic, Sharonkay, and family:

Below is a piece written by Henry Scott Holland (27 January 1847 17 March 1918) Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford may it bring you comfort during this time a great loss and sorrow.

Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort. without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, some where very near, just round the comer. All is well.

All our love,
Barney and Judy
