Mitchell Fernie Obituary

Mitchell Kerr
Fernie, 53
CUMBERLAND -- Mitchell Fernie died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at home surrounded by his family.
Mitchell is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Borchardt; his mother, June E. Fernie of Kennebunk; his brother, Bruce Fernie of Florence, Italy, his sister, Heather McInnis of Kennebunkport; three nephews, Alex Fernie, Mitchell Kell and Trevor Kell, and three nieces, Dana Fernie, Bowen Fernie and Avery Fernie. Mitchell was predeceased by his father, Kennebunkport artist, John A. Fernie.
Mitchell was born on Sept. 19, 1958, into a community of artists in Westport, Conn., then moved with his family to Vermont in 1970. After high school, he lived in Denver, Colo., and Boston, Mass., before settling in Portland in the 1980s.
He was a partner in the Portland advertising groups Surprise Advertising and Print Media prior to establishing his own graphic design firm MK Fernie Associates. For the last 10 years Mitchell combined his love of antique signage and carpentry skills into a successful small business that produced handcrafted, original wooden signs sold at selected Maine galleries and worldwide via mail-order. An avid Porsche enthusiast, he spent numerous seasons racing his Porsche 911 in SCCA regional events.
Mitchell Fernie was a fierce individualist, an accomplished artist and designer, an intrepid entrepreneur, passionate woodworker, gardener, and life-long dog lover. Mitchell's kind heart and quick, acerbic wit will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A private celebration of Mitchell's life is planned. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to share condolences, memories and tributes with Mitchell's family.

I first got to know Mitchell while bidding on a civil war themed sign he was offering on Ebay. This led to him doing a total of 5 signs for my wife & I.
All except 2 hang in our house (2 went to my kids). We see these signs everyday and they are a beautiful source of pleasure. Mitchell and I discussed the design aspects of them and in that process I got to know Mitchell pretty well, I sent him a book on Early American Tavern signs & he sent a book by an RAF pilot pal of his father, (also an RAF pilot). We discovered we shared an interest in Sports Cars in these phone talks & emails. I'm deeply saddened by the discovery of his passing, he was a talented artist/designer and a very enjoyable and likeable man.

I was saddened to hear of Mitch's passing. He was my classmate in Springfield. Although our paths have only crossed once since then, I remember him as having the energy of a kind, friendly soul, always lighting the way with a quick smile and sense of humor. I have heard from many other classmates who all have the same memory of Mitch. May you and your family find grace and peace.

I was at the intersection of the Middle Road and RT 9 I took the Middle and was looking to see if Mitchell "ferrrr ferrrr ferrrr" was home Friday this past week, they were working on the driveway at the bottom. I wish I pushed my way through. I'm so sorry Barbara I know you loved him. When his dad passed he designed this great announcement.... I have a hand made house he made for me with a light, he was the true artist. I miss him.

How sad. Mitchell was cut from different cloth- one of a kind! I think of him every time I use the table saw he gave me and we use it a lot. We also have one of his cool little mini buildings he made and use it to decorate our mantle each Christmas. He did everything with a real designers touch and had a sort of old world sensibility that probably originated in his fabulous moustache! We'll miss him, but Ive heard Limerock was like Heaven to Mitchell...so I think I know where he'll be.

I had the pleasure of working for M Kerr Fernie in the late 80's. He was the most alive!, funny, goofy, talented, patient...TALENTED person I believe I will ever know. I loved every moment working with him. That man was somthin'. My heartfelt warmth to his family and friends. He was one fantastic tall drink of water.
