Muriel Freeman Obituary

FREEMAN--Muriel Leopold, January 2, 1917--March 15, 2008. Author, sportswoman and philanthropist passed away at home in New York City on March 15, 2008. Muriel Freeman was born on January 2, 1917 to Mildred and Arthur Leopold in Woodmere, Long Island. She graduated from Wilson College where she was head of the equestrian team and regularly competed at the National Horse show at Madison Square Garden. Muriel was married to Bunny Freeman on September 17, 1937 until his untimely passing in 1972 at 55 years old. He was an avid golfer and encouraged her to take up the sport. During the 1950s, 60s and 70s, she won the Women's Long Island Golf championship seven times, The Cross County Championship five times, the Women's Metropolitan Championship once and was the New York State Championship medalist in 1957. During the 1960s and 70s, she became more involved in the dog show world. In the 1980s Muriel was the first non-German and first woman to judge the Rottweiler Bundesieger in Germany--considered to be the pinnacle in Rottweiler knowledge--and would do it again a few years later. She also traveled extensively, judging at prestigious dog shows all over the world. Muriel Freeman was best known in recent years for her extraordinary knowledge of working and herding dogs. In 1984, she wrote The Complete Rottweiler. It is in its 26th edition and has sold more volumes than any single breed dog book. It was required reading for new AKC judges working with larger breeds. In 1989, she judged Best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club Show at Madison Square Garden--considered to be pinnacle of the U.S. dog world by the cognoscenti. As part of her interest in dogs, Muriel Freeman worked with and endowed many significant studies at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) to define and limit hip dysplasia and the other diseases that strike larger dog breeds. Muriel Freeman passed away at her home in New York City on March 15 leaving her son James and daughter-in-law Laura, three grandchildren, Rebecca Freeman, Hadley Lehrman and Jim Freeman, grandsonin-law Gary Lehrman, two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Andrew Lehrman, and her closest friend Dorothy Collier. Friends and family are invited to the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, 1076 Madison Avenue, Tuesday evening from 5:00-7:30 pm. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to The University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School would be appreciated.

I read The Complete Rottweiler in 1987 or '88, and it cemented my interest in these dogs. While it would be another decade before the first, of many, would grace my life, I appreciate her influence. My life has been better for it.

She and her book randomly crossed my mind this morning, some 35 years later. And to see how positively impactful she was is heartening.

Even if only in print, I'm glad she came into my life. She was a fine ambassador for the breed,

Dagmar Hodinar and myself were fortunate to visit Muriel at her Long Island estate in 1969. She arranged for us to meet the breeder of our first Rott puppy and to show it in Princeton. We treasured her hands-on approach and her outspokedness. A great lady in so many ways.

I had the wonderful fortune to acquire my first Rottweiler in 1984. It was instant, passionate love for the breed.

Soon thereafter I bought The Complete Rottweiler, a book I read and re-read and treasure.

Those of us who love the breed have lost a titan.

Like so many Rottweiler fanciers, I also have fond memories of Mrs. Freeman and was awed in her presence and by her graciousness and patience with those new to the breed. What a blessing God bestowed on the Rottweiler and us when He brought her into our lives. She will forever be the Grand Dame of our breed and a true friend in our hearts. She has left a legacy that will transcend time and for that, may we be grateful. May God bless and comfort those closest to her during this time of loss.

Muriel was a true friend of the Rottweiler and a gracious lady who always had the best interests of the breed in mind. She was willing to share her knowledge and expertise with anyone who asked. She will be sorely missed by the rottweiler community in particular and the dog world in general. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Although I did not know Mrs. Freeman personally, she is responsible for me obtaining my first Rottweiller, Sieglinde I. On the recommendation of my breeder, I purchased Mrs. Freeman's book in 1985 the year I obtained my first Rottie.

I have been a Rottweiller owner for 23 years and because of Mrs. Freeman, I have a deep and abiding appreciation and love of this breed.

Sincere appreciation and gratitude to Mrs. Freeman for her dedication to the Rottweiler breed. Due to her efforts on our behalf, we found our first Rottweiler 25 years ago. Through her work we expanded our knowledge and love of the breed.

It was my pleasure, and my mother's, to host Mrs. Freeman in my home when she passed through Chicago in the 1980's. She was most gracious and generous in sharing her knowledge of Rottweilers with us. We have lost a grand lady.

March 18, 2008

My sincere condolences to Ms. Freeman's family and close friends.

We are all feeling this loss today, though I knew her only through my dogs, our beloved Rottweilers. I purchased her book shortly after my first Rottweiler joined my life in 1985. It became my bible, marked up and well read, and with the book I was able to trace my girl's lineage back to the first Rottweiler to arrive in Great Britain after WWII--a thrill.
Our breed, and the dog world, has lost a champion, and we are indebted to Ms. Freeman for all she's done for us. It's up to us to carry her legacy forward.

My condolences to the family and close friends of Mrs. Freeman. She was elegant, accomplished and always a lady. Her mentorship and guidance facilitated the development of the Rottweiler fancy in America. Her intense interest in, and generosity toward canine health research has benefited so many of our dogs and contributed to a healthier future for purebred dogs. She will be remembered as long as there are breeders, judges, and exhibitors to read her book and recount the stories of her involvement. We cherish the memories. God speed, Muriel.

Dear Muriel,

You were instrumental in Ted's and my appreciation and understanding of the breed. Your contribution to the sport of dogs will never be paralleled. However, more importantly your support and kindness to those coming up in the Rottweiler made us extremely fortunate to have had your attention.

I know that there are many many Rottweilers gathered around you now. They have you to thank for the right direction the breed took in this country. Inga will be trying to climb into your lap, I am sure.

Thank you for taking your time with us when we were starting out. You are very missed.
