I was a student at Columbia P&S, graduating in 1981. In my senior year I did a neuro- ophthalmology elective with Dr. Behrens, a true gentleman. A great teacher as well as a brilliant and compassionate physician. Working with him helped to cement my desire to become an ophthalmologist. I later trained at the Wills Eye Hospital and went on to a long and rewarding career in ophthalmology. Thank you Dr. Behrens. You will be missed.

I loved him too.

I´m so sorry to hear Dr Behrens died. He was my first doctor to diagnose me with Optic Neuritis and Multiple Sclerosis in 1985. I even invited him to my big fat Greek wedding in 1990. Anastasia Papadopoulos

Dr. Behrens was a treasure. We met him when my son was initially diagnosed with NF2, and he was a steadfast voice in the chaotic waters we were in the midst of - his brilliance and low key manner are what kept us sane for so many years.

I worked with Dr. Behrens summers during college and then while in medical school. He thought that the eye was the window to the brain - and that guided my exploration of neuroscience; an to an eventual PhD. He will be missed. -Brad Poulos

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
