Dear Aunt Barbara, Nels, Bob, and Malcolm

Again, my condolences in hearing about the passing of Uncle Dan. I'm sorry I missed his memorial service. When I return to Toledo this spring of summer, I'll bring my bagpipes and play a tune or two at his grave site.

The thing I remember most about “Mr. Abbey” is the way he treated people with respect and made them feel good about themselves. I was a friend of Lee’s in our teenage years, and a kid who ran an occasional errand or cut the grass for Mr. Abbey. I was nobody of particular importance at the time, and yet he never talked down to me or treated me as an inferior. He spoke to me as an adult and someone who he simply assumed would rise to the occasion, whatever that may be. To me he was the...
