Nelson ABBEY Obituary

ABBEY Nelson D. "Dan" Jr. Nelson D. "Dan" Abbey Jr., passed away on February 1, 2010, at the age of 82, in his summer home on Pelee Island. Dan will be remembered for his many adventures around the world and the wonderful stories and life lessons that he shared with his family and dear friends. He was born in Toledo and attended Old Orchard School, Culver Military Academy, and Case Institute of Technology. He enthusiastically led the family business, Abbey Etna Machine Company, into international markets as President and Chairman. He loved to travel and had a great interest in India, Pakistan, South America, Europe, and the Middle East. He lived with his family in Switzerland, Paris, and most recently in Spain. Dan has now been reunited with his sons Alex and Lee who passed before him. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; three sons, Nelson (Chris), Robert (Mary Beth), and Malcolm (Michelle); and five beautiful grandchildren Sean (Lisa), Matthew, Kevin, Will, and Ellie, with whom his spirit lives on. In celebration of Dan's life, his family will host a reception at Carranor Hunt and Polo Club, 502 E. Second St., Perrysburg, Ohio, on February 25th at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to North Coast Cancer Foundation, 417 Quarry Lakes Dr., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870.

Dear Aunt Barbara, Nels, Bob, and Malcolm

Again, my condolences in hearing about the passing of Uncle Dan. I'm sorry I missed his memorial service. When I return to Toledo this spring of summer, I'll bring my bagpipes and play a tune or two at his grave site.

The thing I remember most about “Mr. Abbey” is the way he treated people with respect and made them feel good about themselves. I was a friend of Lee’s in our teenage years, and a kid who ran an occasional errand or cut the grass for Mr. Abbey. I was nobody of particular importance at the time, and yet he never talked down to me or treated me as an inferior. He spoke to me as an adult and someone who he simply assumed would rise to the occasion, whatever that may be. To me he was the epitome of class.
Now that I am an adult and an Executive myself, I sometimes find myself in challenging business situations. When I do, I often ask myself, “What would Dan Abbey do ?”
To Nelson and the Abbey family, I hope you can find joy in the memory of a father and man who left a legacy of a life well lived.

Dan was the definiton of a Renaissance man: a cultured man who was knowledgeable, educated, or proficient in a wide range of fields. He was a gentleman of the old school with a gift of making a person feel special. My sympathies go out to the entire Abbey family on the loss of this fine man.

Tothe Abbey family;
I had the honor of meeting Dan several years ago at his home on Pelee, while on a sailing trip. A most gracious man, he invited us to spend the night at his home. I found him to be a most interesting and congenial person. There should be more like him in our world.

I would like to offer my condolences to Nelson, Robert and the Abbey family. I consider myself lucky to have known him and will miss him. Dan had a great sense of humor and I’ll always remember him walking around the engineering room with that cigar in his hand. I will miss you and be thankful for the break you gave me.

We read with much sadness of the passing of Dan, and old friend who was a bigger than life, He had great enthusiasm, much class - creativity, passion, kindness and so many other qualities. We remember swimming at midnight or later, at the Hull Prairie pool, and his generosity and wonderful personality. We shared Tom, the barber of The Toledo Club for over 40 years. We also remeber the fun Abby Aetna anniversary party, helicopter and all, and sadly the passing of two of his sons. To Barbara and family, our sympathy. Unfortunately, we are in Florida and will not be able to atten the reception but will be thinking of the Abby family. Spencer and Prudy Stone
