Dear DeCarlo Family,

I was deeply saddened when I read the email from Donna. I remember Mary Beth could not believe her good fortune when Nick popped the question.

My dear parents Fran & Jean Dwyer adored him. He was the heart and soul of his family.

I have so many wonderful memories. Every time they were blessed with a new baby(excluding Mark) we were on a trip to meet the newest family member. When Katie was born, I did the trip with my friend, since my parents had already passed.

Sara, Fay and family my deepest sympathy to you all, since you are the ones who will feel this loss the deepest. He is at peace now and has no more pain.

I thank the Lord for bringing Nick into our lives and one day I will see him again, along with everyone the Lord has called home.

Dear Nick,
I write this to you because you still live on through the exemplary life you lived and your leadership. I was looking forward to seeing you and meeting your wife at our 50th high school reunion and regret that won’t be possible. This is to express my sincere thanks for the positive impact you had on my life. It was evident even in grammar school that you would always be an ambassador of kindness and compassion and bring out the best in anyone you who came in contact with you.

I don’t know Sarah but, from reading these messages she sounds wonderful, too. Please accept my most profound condolences and may God bless those you leave behind.

Dear DeCarlo Family,
Nick was a contemporary of mine in the Navy JAG Corps and succeeded me as personnel detailer in 1979. i had not seen Nick for many years and deeply regret not having done so. He was a wonderful person, truly one of the best I knew in the Navy Jag. I know he will be deeply missed by all who had the great privilege of being his friend. My prayers are with you. God Bless.

Katie and DeCarlo Family,

I remember both Katie and her father while at Holy Trinity. I was sad to hear of Mr. DeCarlo's condition, and ultimately his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and may God help you through this time.

Dear DeCarlo Family,

I am a friend of Katie's from Miami University and I have great memories of being with Mr. DeCarlo for our sorority "Dad's weekends." We had lots of laughs and it was so great to see such a wonderful relationship between Katie and her dad. It was also fun having my dad and Mr. DeCarlo get along so well. Katie and I spent a lot of time together while we both lived in Chicago after college and we always shared stories about our families. Katie clearly loved her dad. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear DeCarlo Family,

It was with great sadness that I learned of Nick's passing. It has been many years since I have seen him or been in touch with him but my memories of him will always be of a warm and wonderful man of great dignity and kindness.

I was a good friend of his first wife, Mary Beth and spent happy days with them when the children were small. It pains me to know he suffered with a long illness.

My deep sympathy goes out to his wife Sara and his beautiful family as I know what a loss this is for them and for all of us. He was a rare gentleman, and an exceptional human being. Sincerely, Caroline Kelley

Dear DeCarlo Family,

On behalf of the Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps, I want to offer our condolences on Nick's passing.

I knew Nick when I was a junior officer and he was a Captain. Without fail, he treated his peers and those of us looking up to him with grace, humor, and, of course, professionalism. Those of us who remember Nick remember him as a kind man and terrific Judge Advocate.

He will be missed.

Sincerely,

James W. Houck
Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy
Judge Advocate General of the Navy

Hi, I'm a classmate of Nick's from Holy Cross and I must admit I don't remember him--at least from his picture here in the obit. I do regret his passing and send my prayers and condolences to his family. His passing reminds us all how fragile and precious life is and that it can end at any moment. Sincerely, Chuck Jagoda, Palo Alto, CA

Dear Sara,
Great sadness filled my heart as I read about Nick's passing by way of a note from our classmate Tim Hayes and then Ron Maheu who was kind enough to send this link.

With envy for the lifelong friendship evidenced by the many notes posted herein, such accolades and character attributes come as no surprise. Nick certainly was the embodiment of all good things and eagerly shared his knowledge and encouragement with everyone with whom he came in contact.

Clearly a great father, friend and husband and very much in a better place, the pain of his loss will also pass. This will be especially so by knowing his temporal suffering has ended and that your "fine feathered friend" has flown to the arms of our Lord.( I defer to Duke Kerr's attribution.)

Now every time I watch the television program "JAG", one of my favorites, Nick will always appear as my Judge Advocate General. With love and affection for you and your family, Chris McGratty, Holy Cross, '64. Semper Fidelis, NIck, Semper Fi.

To the DeCarlo Family: we are writing to offer our most sincere condolences on the sad occasion of Nick's passing. We served with Nick at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1991 to 1994, and he was a truly superb officer, lawyer, mentor, and friend. Nick had a good heart for everyone and always did what he thought was right- he was an example of what it means to take care of your neighbor. May the Lord be with your family at this difficult time. Sincerely, CAPT Daniel G. Donovan, JAGC, USN (Ret) and CAPT Janet Donovan, JAGC, USNR

To the Decarlo Family
my condolences to all of the family. I graduated from high school with Nick and at that time he was always active in the student council so it doesn't surprise me of all his accomplishments. My thoughts and prayers are with all of your family.

Dear Decarlo Family:

I remember Nick from my earliest days in the JAG Corps. He had an outstanding reputation as a lawyer, but perhaps more importantly for his integrity. I had the privilege of getting to know him personally through our service at the Naval Academy, and I found that his reputation was well deserved.

Shirley and I send out heartfelt sympathy, and our hope you'll be comforted by your memories of a wonderful person.

Sincerely,
Mike Lord

Dear DeCarlo Family,
Having served with Nick throughout his career, and then seeing him regularly as we visited some of the same clinics at Bethesda, I had been worrying about Nick since I had not seen him for some time. He fought the valiant fight and is now in a better place. May the Holy Spirit guide you through these sad times. God bless you all.

To the DeCarlo family. My most heartfelt condolences and prayers are with you all. Nick was my detailer in the Navy JAG Corps and later my XO at the Naval Justice School. He was a superb Naval officer and attorney who took care of his people and mentored me well in my career. May God grant you peace and courage through these difficult times. Daniel J. Dear Sara,

Please accept our most sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of Nick. I’ve known Nick since we were 14 years old at the same summer camp. We later competed against each other in sports in Syracuse. As I told you when I last saw you and Nick a couple of years ago, though I haven’t seen Nick often over the years, I’ve followed his life from a distance as a strong admirer of his. It was clear to me from day one that Nick had an unsurpassed strength of character as a man, a son, a husband, a father and a citizen. As I read recently, what is attributed to a Cherokee Chief, Nick was good, joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith all wrapped up in a truly nice guy.

They say “birds of a feather” and that fully applies to you Sara. You have been as strong as anyone could be as Nick’s partner and caregiver. Your stepping forward to add Nick’s mother to your care giving is but a testament to your tremendous strength of character. They say “still waters run deep”, a perfect representation of you and Nick as partners.
