My father, Fred L. Sypherd, and I were fortunate to meet Paul and his father Pearl at Dr. Sypherd's home in Newport Beach, CA, in December 1967. I had moved to California in July of 1967 and my parents came to visit from Illinois. At that time we did not have all the genealogy data to link our families together, but knew there must be a connection. I now know that we share a common ancestor in Matthias Sypherd (1763, Maryland - 1821, Virginia).
Paul and his father were gracious hosts to my father and me, and I remember the joy my father expressed at meeting them both. I am truly sorry to learn of his passing and belatedly offer sincere condolences to all his family.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Paul Sypherd. I worked with Dr. Sypherd at UCI, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. I was just twenty years old when I was hired as a clerk in the office while Dr. Sypherd was chairman of the department. I was so incredibly overwhelmed and intimidated, working for such esteemed researchers. In the midst of being a young woman that had to leave college to make a living, it was under the support and confidence by Dr. Sypherd that I was able to rise within the department to become its financial analyst, and eventually move on to become the youngest senior accountant at UCI. I would have never had such an opportunity to excel without his positive and supportive nature. Paul Sypherd saw everyone as the person that they could be, he really cared,
I remember him asking me to advise him about his dog. He had a new puppy that refused to eat or thrive while wearing a collar. Paul was so worried. He knew that I had a love for animals and asked for my advice. And I remembered thinking that this very accomplished man was so worried about this little puppy. I remembered thinking about how kind he was and that I was truly touched.
I know that my moments with Paul Sypherd are not remarkable, because I know he touched so many lives. He made the effort to bring them happiness and joy to everyone he knew. He always expected excellence and he made it so easy to deliver the very best. Because when you are valued and appreciated, you will always deliver your very best.
My condolences to the Sypherd family.

Dear Linda and family, so very sorry to hear about Paul (Dr. Sypherd as I knew him). I value the years I worked in his office as Provost at the UA. He was always so gracious and kind. A special person in my memories. My deepest sympathies to you all since I know you are missing a wonderful man. Best always, Kathy Ott
