Peter D'Amico Obituary

Peter D'Amico December 11, 2015 San Diego Peter D'Amico passed away Friday, December 11. He was 94. Peter was born in 1921 in New York City, where he lived, until he enlisted in the military in 1942. Peter worked in intelligence for the US Army, where he served during the war through 1944. After his service, he attended the City University of New York on the GI Bill, where he received his degree in Civil Engineering. After many years in New York, he decided to travel, and spent time working in Iceland, London, and France; time in his life that sparked his love of classical musical, beauty, literature, and knowledge itself. From 1960 through 1988, Peter worked with Boeing and Convair in Seattle, San Diego, and Long Beach, with a lengthy tenure at the City of San Diego as a civil engineer. In his career, Peter designed the Miramar Reservoir, worked on aerospace projects relating to travel to the moon, and was always sought out as the structural problem-solver for many important projects. In Seattle in 1960, he met Birgit "Bibbi" Andersson who was a nurse from Sweden on an exchange program. The two fell in love and dated long-distance between Sweden and the U.S through 1967 when they married in Long Beach, CA. Together the two traveled the world, including wonderful trips to Italy, France, India, China, Korea and Hawaii. After his retirement, Peter would spend hours in the San Diego public library reading the books and research of the great thinkers in mathematics, physics, and statistics. And, he would immerse himself in the great classical composers, operas, and poetry. He was a true intellectual but passionate in his loves, especially so for his "älskling" , Bibbi. Peter is survived by Bibbi, nieces and nephews in New York, Bibbi's family in Sweden, and many Godchildren, including Annika Jimenez and Michael Alford in San Diego. There will be a private ceremony and remembrance.
