Not sure what to say?

Today's memorial service honoring Peter's life restored him to us for a little while. Nice to be reminded of this utterly unique guy, one of the very few in public life with whom you could have a real conversation, vs exchanging talking points, or having someone glance constantly past your ear, scanning for the next contact who must be “worked.” His skills and breadth of knowledge, and the generosity with which he shared them was coupled with humility, and a fearless, lifelong commitment to...

Peter was an amazing man that had some pretty good stories of his life. I was one of his caregivers in the end and took him fishing every weekend. He would share stories of encouragement and temperance. His life was dedicated to helping others and was an American hero in my opinion(even though he was born in Germany). He will be missed.

I was just wondering how Peter was doing, and found out he has passed away. Peter was a brilliant man who had a *huge* heart. He was good friends with my father, Bob Lindsay. He would often have dinner with us or be at our house for meetings. I still remember when I was very small he taught me how to count by 3's, using a rhythmic method.

He was a really great guy. My condolences to his family and friends.

I left out some words in my original posting: Ira considered Peter the brightest person he had ever met and he met a lot of people over the years here and abroad. I will miss sitting next to Peter at PDC luncheons where I would get his current analysis of politics. I feel so blessed to have known him and Ira.

Mom (Lee Sturtevant) and Peter at Lake Almanor

Daniel and Aidan with Peter at family celebration

I remember hearing about the Sundays Peter shared with Ira! They had a two-man book club, and I always asked what they were reading. His very nice companion was my mom, Leisa Sturtevant, who died August 7.

I knew Peter for many years. Both at PDC(Peninsula Democratic Coalition) events where we were members and through his friendship with Ira Sandperl who lived in my apt. complex. He would come by to pick Ira up to have breakfast and visit every Sunday. He would pull into the driveway which is where my apt. is located on Roble Ave. in Menlo Park. Peter was the quietist person I knew-very humble. I am a social activist, like Peter, and I work on Single Payer legislation and the homeless issues. I...

Peter was a wonderful part of our family for several decades, and a great support to my husband and me in raising our deaf and disabled son, who is named for him. I loved his gentle humor and the way he could always find a historical moment more discouraging than our own. I miss him so much!
